if you're serious about understanding any form (literature, film, anything), you fight through this. of course stuff made twenty years ago sounds a little bit foreign to you. that's on you, not the work. it'll go away forever if you put in a modicum of effort in the short term.

    Classic.
1a. How old were you when Aquemini was released and did you hear it when it first came out? What was your reaction?
1b. If not, when did you first hear Aquemini? How do you think listening to it at a later date affected your view of it?
I was young when it was released and was young when I first heard it. To be honest, I've always kind of stanned Outkast and have been listening to their stuff consistently for awhile now. I've always had the same basic impression of it.
    2. Today, how does it hold up sonically? Does it still sound fresh?
Gracefully. A lot of albums, especially looking back into the 90's, may lose a step for some people. However, this has always held up for me. Such a distinct sound.
    3. What about content-wise? Does its theme or subject matter make it feel dated or is it timeless?
No it truly is timeless. I'll be bumping this next week, and I'll be bumping this 20 years from now. Just one of those records, man.
    4. What are the best and worst songs on Aquemini?
Personally, I like Return of the G, and Da Art of Story Tellin' Pt 1. and obv Rosa Parks. As far as the worst songs go, there aren't really any. There are songs that can't hold a candle to some of the better ones, but still, those are still pretty great.
    5. What albums, if any, do you see it still influencing today?
It's apparent in Kendrick's music. I believe J. Cole takes an influence from them as well.
    6. Will Aquemini still be part of the hip-hop zeitgeist 10 years from now?
    Absolutely, man.

i forgot about the best song. here's some sacrilege: i love how forward-thinking aquemini is. i love dre (and specifically, the interplay between dre and big boi). i love what aquemini represents, how it's a bizarre evolution of a group who had mastered their roots.

but my favorite song on it is the big boi solo cut that was made for their debut album.

    1. Heard this s--- 2-3 years ago fromt to back, obvs heard da art of storytellin and rosa parks before that but that was the first time all the way through.

    2. Sonically this album is timeless.
    3. Content wise the album is timeless, return of the G still crazy relevant for example.

    4. My personal favorites on this album are west savannah and return of the G. There are no bad songs imo.

    5. Kendrick is clearly influenced by outkast, j cole a little bit as well.

    6. Aquemini will be a part of hip hop forever, 10/10 album.

Solid album to start this thread with @BigCountry :daps:

it really does go away. i was never really a movie person growing up--too obsessed with sports and rap--but my time in a film program made my aversion to older stuff totally evaporate. if you make a concerted effort to wrap your head around older aesthetics, you'll learn to love them very quickly. but you have to immerse yourself. wu-tang doesn't sound at all like jay-z.

Ironically I really got into 36 Chambers a few years back... I think maybe part of the reason I don't like older s--- is that I only f----- with it when I was in that backpacker stage and am kind of projecting my dislike of my old listening habits onto those albums. I'll definitely start going back through old s--- for sure, I have an entire thread dedicated to showing me old albums I may not have heard :p

Sadly no. I f---ing love every single Outkast song I've ever heard with a burning passion, but that's mainly the hits from Speakerbox/Love Below and then Elevators (me and you) whichever album that's from

i totally understand this and think it's admirable that you can recognize that that's what's going on. if you want to pm me a list of what you like (currently and all-time) i'd be glad to point you in some right directions.

I always wonder how some people make their way to rap forums. So many posters need genre education. When I first joined forums like day 1 i downloaded as much as I could. Now people post without any grounds

1a. How old were you when Aquemini was released and did you hear it when it first came out? What was your reaction?
I'm 23 now, so I was exactly 7 years old. My neighbors were huge hip hop heads ,so i might've heard them blast it lol but I wasn't cognisant at the time.
1b. If not, when did you first hear Aquemini? How do you think listening to it at a later date affected your view of it?
I first heard it when i was like 15, because that's when I started really getting into hip hop. And when you live in south texas everybody wants to know who your favorite south rapper is, so I was doing research on classic southern hip hop records. I was coming across geto boys, ugk, scarface, and finally I came across outkast. this was the first album I heard by them. Also, considering this is circa 05-06 EVERYBODY's favorite rapper was chamillionaire, paul wall, mike jones, with a few pimps and bun b's peppered in there by the og's. I was 15 and wanted so bad to be different, so I had to go with this. It wasn't until later though, that I really delved into the lyrics and the music and fell in love.
    2. Today, how does it hold up sonically? Does it still sound fresh?
Definitely. I mean J. Cole pretty much just used the art of storytelling pt1 beat on born sinner and surprisingly a lot of young people were unaware that it was an outkast beat. regardless of what you think of cole or that record, that speaks volumes.
    3. What about content-wise? Does its theme or subject matter make it feel dated or is it timeless?
Just the fact that the imagery is so vivid makes this the standard for story telling, even today.
    4. What are the best and worst songs on Aquemini?
It's hard to choose the best without naming at least half the project for me. However, the art of storytelling will always hold a special place. the horns on dopaliscious are classic too. i feel like i'll regret naming a 'worst song' so I'll pass.
    5. What albums, if any, do you see it still influencing today?
Indirectly, most. Directly, I feel like artists like krit, kendrick, blu even people like asap draw a lot of inspiration from this.
    6. Will Aquemini still be part of the hip-hop zeitgeist 10 years from now?
    For sure, and beyond.
