    I have a hard time believing that any athletes from the 60s or prior could hang with their modern counterparts. There is a reason that Olympic records continue to be broken time and time again. Athletes are better/smartly conditioned today and stand on the progress in technique of the past history of their respective sports.

    That said, I don't think pitting them in a head-to-head hypothetical is fair. You should compare their resumes.

    yeah, i think this is where you were going with your last point, but: accepting that athletes today are certainly better conditioned and benefit from better technology, you have to control for that when comparing two people across eras. who's to say pele (or gordie howe or jim brown or stan musial) wouldn't be just as good or better if they were born in 1980?

    i dont think he's overrated he done some amazing things in football

    but i think players are better nowadays and if pele was playing now would he be scoring more goals than games played each season like messi or ronaldo? i don't think so

    these 2 have taken it to the next level

    I think the game has changed and it's hard to compare them. That said Ronaldo and Messi are on fire this season. Like you I haven't seen him play, but I doubt that he was the same as them, especially Ronaldo
