Dec 8, 2022One of my personal favorite Pop Punk bands and band in general is releasing their 6th studio album after a 5 year hiatus (that of which was occupied by solo projects of the members) titled "This Is Why" in February. I'm making this thread to showcase the singles and to revisit when the album eventually drops.
There are main 2 inspirations for the record, the first is old funk rock bands like Talking Heads and the Red Hot Chili Peppers album Freaky Styley as shown in the first single, the title track:
And the other of the inspirations is British Dance Punk, the main band of which was Bloc Party. And you can really hear it in their newest single which came out just a few minutes ago:
Fair warning, I'm going to get absolutely insufferable when this album comes out if it's good and they've never made a bad album so get ready.

I will say you and @Ripper Roo gotta check out their discog cause this is one of their weakest albums to me (subject to change) but it's still at least a 7/10, if anything it's a testament to their output that people are arguing over this album.Ordinary Joel, Chrollo and Ripper Roo like this. -

I really like the album but similar to Roo I haven't listened to much Paramore, so interesting to see that the consensus is way more mixed than I thoughtOrdinary Joel, jankland and Ripper Roo like this.(This ad goes away when signing up) -

All in all I think I'd rather them try a bunch of different styles than phone it in on the Pop Punk revival, although I would enjoy it if they went back to that style as long as they were actually inspired to. But to everyone that thinks Paramore is pop punk only they haven't been doing that type of music for like a decade now lol.
Songs from here are already growing on me and getting stuck in my head, it's just the album as a whole listening experience (and I'm not a huge fan of liar) that i have to hopefully warm up to. It has a weirder pacing than their other records due to the number of tracks I believe.Last edited: Feb 10, 2023Chrollo, Ordinary Joel and Ripper Roo like this. -

Seeing these different perspectives makes me wonder if I would enjoy this album more or less if I was an actual fan of Paramore. I wonder if this is a case of fans not wanting the band to progress and change up their sound and wanting them to make the same s--- over and over again, or if they really did miss the mark.
Artists and bands fall into this trap where if they don’t change up their sound in some way at some point they get criticized for it, but then if they keep using the same sound they get criticized for that too. I’m not a true fan of Paramore, so of course I have no knowledge on this. These are just things I’m wonderingChrollo, Ordinary Joel and jankland like this. -

I will say the discourse around this album is interesting cause it's either people's favorite Paramore album or their least favorite with little in-between.
What I can say is other than like one song a lot of it has grown on me (my only technical gripe is that I feel some of the vocals and instruments could've been mixed a bit louder and punchier) but it's a specific mood I have to be in for this kind of music, lucky for me this band has music for if I'm in the mood for pop punk on their first 3 records, pop/pop rock on their self titled, 80s synth pop on After Laughter, and now indie post punk on this one. All they have to do now is make a metalcore album and a rap album to basically run the gambit of my entire music taste lmaoChrollo, Ordinary Joel and Ripper Roo like this. -

I only heard about a minute of this song, trying not to spoil myself on the rest of the record until it comes out since it's only 10 tracks. This is bound to be one of their most divisive songs ever since it's so different from the norm, I didn't know how to feel at first but now I kinda dig what I heard.Michael Myers, Ordinary Joel and Ripper Roo like this.(This ad goes away when signing up) -
