When people refer to Jay's best work you often hear Reasonable Doubt, Blueprint, American Gangster but I rarely hear people say The Black Album. It sits as Jay's 3rd best album for me so maybe I just hold it to a higher standard than most people.

american gangster as a top-three jay album is an opinion that is only really heard on rb/sl/s80, and i think it can be entirely traced back to me lol. i'm skewing the results. you're fine.

Better off Dead by flatbush zombies doesn't get enough love. it's all but forgotten.

kind of struggling to think of examples though. Most great albums get their just dues.

Ras Kass & Apollo Brown- Blasphemy didn't get a lot of attention but it's a great project.

Eyedea & Abilities By The Throat is cherished by a very specific audience. Had there been as strong an internet rap press back then, I could see it getting a lot more popular and indie crossover. Abilities manages to catch up to Eyedea. Lots of experimenting. Broken singing that manages to work on sincerity. A short, consistent suicide note detailing the inner-workings of a paranoid, distressed drug addict who happens to be a h--- of a musician.

One.Be.Lo's S.O.N.O.G.R.A.M. really doesn't have a niche audience that I know of. Formerly One Many Army, he's one half of Binary Star that people know pretty much exclusively for Masters of the Universe. While it does sound a bit too much like "rappity rap" for me nowadays, it still feels like a precursor to what Lupe did not long after. Lots of wordplay and creative concepts. I personally like it better than Masters of the Universe.

Another answer would probably be a Busdriver album. He didn't really break through until last year and he was just as prolific as Aesop Rock for the longest time, a rapper who dominates a fanbase that would probably like him just as much. While we're on the subject, Skelethon is Aesop's best album to date yet I feel even among his fans that's not a very popular opinion.
