Why do people think rap is a subgenre of rock?

Rappers are in the Rock N Roll hall of fame. There is a section on hip-hop in every rock n' roll history course. Why? They don't play instruments, especially ones generally associated with rock. Rap beats evolved from disco DJs flipping funk and disco samples. Rapping's closest predecessors were jazzy, soulful spoken word artists like Gil-Scott Heron.

    My only explanation starts here.

Run DMC used Aerosmith to catapult into the spotlight. Their production was heavily laden with rock motifs. The Beastie Boys were the first rap group to go platinum, drawing from their punk background with the help of legendary rock producer Rick Rubin who claims rap to be an extension of punk. These two groups were the most important in cementing rap as a genre of its own. Unfortunately, this also leads to rock trying to take credit. If anything, rap exploited rock music. Not the other way around.

How do you feel about it?

Kanye is a crossover artist. His music has more in common with Trent Reznor's than most other rappers.

Trent Reznor is one sub-genre of rock..

Yeezus having "trent reznor like beats"... you're right, Kanye might have more in common with Trent Reznor than most rappers, but that doesn't really relate to the topic.

Runaway (minus the pusha verse) would have been a NiN's song if Trent talked/half sung Ye's parts. Rock radio would have played it. It's an industrial rock song.
