I think it boils down to this day and age of social media and the popularity contest it becomes. How many 'friends' you have, how many like you receive.
I dont really add people on facebook and such unless I actually know them and like them in real life and so anybody that is just an acquaintance can get to know me first in person if they feel the need to add me to their facebook friends.
I also think the younger you are the bigger a deal it is to add more people and social media plays more of an important role in life.
