I just learned that The Shawshank Redemption is the most popular movie on IMDB and a possible explanation for why that is. Upon release it wasn't a very big hit and critics didn't really make a deal about it either. So why has it been so widely seen? It was played on the TNT network A LOT. A similar thing actually happened with the film "It's a Wonderful Life". For more information on that, check this out:

A lot of Office Space's cult following was developed the same way. Happens more often than you'd think.

It's almost like your personal experience isn't universal. Anecdotes aren't very reliable.
It barely made it's budget back in its theatrical run.

Res. you're a middle aged drug addict who has spent most of his life doing manual labor. You're biggest skill is being an Eminem fan forum historian. So what who were the smart, important people that saw it?

I'm far from middle aged and I couldn't even be a drug addict if I wanted to... I was born without opiate receptors and do 3 to 5 pre-employment drug tests a year. My biggest skills are in construction management and field engineering, f---ing, taking it easy and a whole host of other skills that rank far above anything I do when I'm f---ing around on this board.
What are you good at... Hating?
