Feb 23, 2025 @AOTWClub with only 3 weeks remaining in mixtapes, if we want to do another round let's try to come up with a theme wed like to use for our next round I was thinking Under rated gems But any ideas are welcome
Feb 23, 2025 I think it’s best if we make theme as broad as possible since there’s a lot of variety in styles across all of us. Like, limiting playlists to one genre or era would probably limit what we could come up with. My idea was Springtime I guess? Not like Spring music or something like that, I mean like music that we individually play/associate with this time of year. Not the best idea I admit but I couldn’t come up with anything else I really like the Underrated gems idea, but I feel that it can be kinda difficult to determine what a deep cut is. I feel that all of the tapes so far have had some pretty deep cuts in them already so I don’t know how we’d differentiate. Open to what y’all have to say though!
Feb 23, 2025 Yeah I said subjective I meant that it doesn't really limit the choices. Underrated gems can mean something different for everyone and doesn't really narrow it down. An era, season or genre is better imo
Feb 23, 2025 Good ideas but both are highly subjective. Anyone can associate any song with a season. A theme can work with flexible guidelines like choosing a specific decade without limiting to a genre or something broader. Like "Songs from the 21st century." Tho i'm for the idea of letting everyone go with what feels right to them. After the inaugural round I’m sure we all have a better idea of the direction we want to take. Still down for whatever
Feb 23, 2025 Michael Myers - Halloween: Revival of Michael Myers Favorites: The Watcher 2, Hustler Musik, Irgendwie…, La Respuesta, Bring Me To Life, Still Alive Least Favorites: WTF Do I Know, Body Talks RIPPER ROO’S RATING: 6/10 I haven’t been into Demi Lovato for a while but “Still Alive” was hard. Having “Bring Me To Life” before that was nice. I dislike “WTF Do I Know” and “Body Talks” for the same reasons: I don’t like the vocal performances, I find the melodies annoying, the songs lack oomph, and overall do nothing for me. “Rio” by J Balvin also does nothing for me really. Becky G with “La Respuesta” on the other hand was kinda cool I guess. “Irgendwie…” (sorry I’m not typing that whole song title) is an interesting 80s song, look I like a song in a different language than English and Spanish for once AHAHAHAHAHA (my sources detect it as German)!!! You have some classics with “The Watcher 2” and “Hustler Musik”. I’m on the verge of liking “Cut the Bridge” by Linkin Park but something about it just can’t get me all the way there to liking it, it’s just okay to me. That’s how I could summarize a lot of this mixtape tbh. I’ll be honest here there’s not much that moves me, impresses me, or gets me enthusiastic about this mixtape. But I can’t deny the quality of most of these songs is good and there’s more songs I like than dislike. It didn’t wow me but it’s a decent tape from Myers. @AOTWClub
Feb 23, 2025 Excited to hop into this tape by Myers. After he dropped The Love Guru in 2009 I haven't checked out most of his stuff but I hope this is similar to his Austin Powers days
Feb 23, 2025 Stoked to get with the halloween energy with this mixtape from mr. Myers. Equally as stoked to show y’all what I have going on with my tape next sunday tho. I’ve been frantically choosing songs, putting them in an order that is appealing to my ears, and then switching up everything and starting anew for like a month now lol. Can’t stop swapping s--- out.
Feb 23, 2025 What really helped me was listening to my mixtape on a drive. Once it hit correctly during the drive, I KNEW that had to be the tracklist order.
Feb 23, 2025 Totally agree! Problem is, besides the mixtapes posted here by others, I haven’t listened to anything but these 16 songs since I started creating the mix lol. I am kind of derranged.
Feb 23, 2025 You might be experiencing ear fatigue. It’s like when mixing engineers work on the same song for too long, they gotta take a break to refresh their ears so they can judge the mix accurately. It might help you to do the same and maybe even listen to other music. Then come back to your mixtape and maybe have a different outlook on it
Feb 23, 2025 Took a break last week and listened to the drake and pnd album. All of a sudden my mix was sounding like the musical cancer cure.
Feb 24, 2025 @jankland - Into The Jank-Verse REVIEW Score: 10.0 (16/16) Sorry for the multiple delays on this review, was not as free the last few days as I had imagined. The build up has been worth it though, as Jankland has my first 10/10 given for Mixtape Mania, and my first overall 10/10 given in this thread! I enjoyed every single song! My jaw dropped when I heard Kendrick on Yeah Right, because I haven't listened to Big Fish Theory yet so congrats on being the first mixtape with a hidden feature that excited me like it was a brand new album. It was cool hearing MAVI again after Botiz suggested that great album he dropped last year for the 2024 bracket thread. Noname's track was dope too, and the closing 4 songs all hit as I expected them to. I think having the live version of Bartender added a lot as well. AMAZING tape Janky! @AOTWClub Mixtape Mania Rankings: 1. Into The Jank-Verse - 10.0 2. EVERY ROO HAS ITS DAY - 9.4 3. The Trudeau Tape - 9.4 4. 1.20.25 - 8.1 5. Get Wreck'd - 5.6
Feb 26, 2025 @Michael Myers - Halloween: Revival of Michael Myers review The AOTWClub has been bestowed with a loosely thematic mixtape! I respect the effort. I’ll get right into my review by saying that the first track does a good job of setting the mood up and playing into the whole halloween idea. On its own I found it a bit bland though. The Watcher 2 is an instant classic and I loved hearing it here. Such a bumpable track! That beat is just great, classic Dre. I enjoyed the following Spineshank song, interesting how it simultaneously represents a Linkin Park ripoff (LP from the early 2000s), and everything LP would want to be nowadays but is pretty much failing miserably at (Cut the Bridge). Honestly From Zero, including this track, sounds like it was written by my adolescent nephew. I sadly disliked the following tracks from SZA, Miley, and J Balvin. Power is power is not a bad track but is just not my cup of tea. The Travis verse was the nail in the coffin here. Miley Cyrus has this weird vocal delivery I’m not that big on and the recycled pop-rock instrumental did not do her any favours either. Rio just did nothing for me over 4 listens. Body Talks is some Zara or H&M music and sounds like something Eminem would’ve sampled on the director’s cut of Revival. I enjoyed the second leg of this mixtape a lot more than the first, I’d say. Hustler Musik is an undeniable classic, Wayne sounded so hungry back then. Fire song. The following song by the Sounds was good, I enjoyed it despite of the production sounding a tad cheesy at times - there was a lot of interesting ideas mixed in too; those saved the song for me. I somewhat like the Steppenwolf song too. My only gripe is that it sounded muddy as h---. The song by Nena was easily one of my favorites. Great intro, buildup, vocals. It sounded very theatrical. From there on out, I enjoyed all 4 remaining songs. Smoke Like a Fire was a lyrical exercise over great, grimey production and La Respuesta was a proper b-----r which mentally took me to a beach party and poured me a shot of mezcal. Nothing to add about Evanescence, always love hearing this song. Classic. The Demi Lovato song closes the mixtape out. I’ll be d---ed; I did not recognize her game before, she went hard as f--- on Still Alive. 6/10 @AOTWClub @Justin Trudeau
