    Clairo - Sling
    album review
    8/10
Favorite tracks: Bambi, Amoeba, Harbor, Joanie, Reaper, Zinnias
Least favorite tracks: Just for today

My bad for taking so long to post this, I’ve played this album a very good amount since it came out, thought I had all my thoughts about the album pretty much formulated but relistening to it again proved me wrong.

Fantastic album from Clairo. I first learned of her music back when Immunity dropped, I liked what that record was trying to go for but felt (and still do, honestly) that she had bitten off more than she could chew when it comes to the often all-over-the place instrumentation.

Since I was a fan of her as a songwriter and thought she surely had a great album in her, I tuned in as soon as Sling had came out, I was proven right.

I feel like Sling is an album of great significance for Clairo; with it she succeeded at making a grand and cohesive project which is a testament to her unique and classy approach to writing and song structure. Sling pulls you in with a brilliant opening track, bambi which is one of my favorite songs on the whole thing. Super mellow and melodic, it is a track where Clairo wears her musical influences on her sleeve, the almost jazzy instrumentation paired with those great crispy drums takes me back to being 17 years old and spam-listening to the same five indie rock records (in the best way possible).

My only little nitpicks on this thing are the rare moments where the production drowns Clairo out in a way and makes her sound like an early Bon Iver tribute act (this sentence may not make sense to everybody but it may resonate with those who were listening to For Emma, forever ago back when it was at its peak popularity.

great suggestion @Ripper Roo , excited to see where Clairo goes next

The album has this great aspect of being able to be extremely depressing but also really relaxing and at times cheerful like the song Zinnias which I noticed is one of your fav tracks. That’s a nice pick

    Depressing, folky music>>>>>>

Zinnias is a great song man, and I agree completely. Ngl at times, this album tries to exude happines but in the grand scheme of things it is very hopeless. And thats one of the reasons why it is so great.

really taps you into the writer’s frame of mind

    @AOTWClub

Favorite Songs: Bambi, Amoeba, Blouse, Harbor, Management

Least favorite: Joanie (there's nothing wrong with this song at all it's just that I like the instrumental so much I'm mad she didn't sing over it lmaoo)

I've had a busy week so I didn't get as much time as I wanted with this album but there's a positive! The positive is that I really enjoyed it and will be spinning this and her other projects in the future.

One thing that I noticed from the style immediately is that this specifically resembled the more warm and full sounds of a singer/songwriter album specifically, to make sure I wasn't going insane I looked up her influences and Bill Withers and Joni Mitchell were there so I'm spitting.

She has a very calming voice and an engaging bull chill writing style that makes for easy brain off and brain on listening, some of the lyrics are pretty depressing especially in songs like 'Blouse' but the melancholy way she sings almost makes it sound complacent which is even more depressing lol.

I usually think acoustic Jack Antonoff is quite boring but it really fits on this album. Since I did feature suggestions with Paris Texas I also want to say I think Clairo would fit perfect on a song with any of the Boygenius members, Hayley Williams solo work, or maybe even Big Thief

This isn't something I can listen to all the time but I can really see myself hitting a sad stint in the fall/winter and bumping this album heavy and it's gonna grow on me lol

    RATING:
    8/10

    First Listen Review:
I wanna start by saying that Clairo has one of the most beautiful voices I have ever heard in music. I find it an actual tragedy that I took this long to get to this album, I remember when the cover got revealed and I was like “I’ll check it out shortly after it drops” and my jaw dropped when I realized it dropped nearly 3 years ago. I get these reviews in last minute but be thankful I don’t take years to get to them! Anyways, this album was absolutely gorgeous to listen to. It starts very strong, but there’s parts in the middle where I found myself not as engaged, which is why I can’t give it a 10. I loved every single track, but it lost my attention at points. The singing, the instrumentation, the songwriting, how certain sounds/vocals would come in at points and be panned to different ears, just absolutely gorgeous. I have no major gripes with this album. Wow. Can’t wait for her new album next week, it’ll be perfect to listen to between listens of TDOSS as a palette cleanser! Thanks for the pick @Ripper Roo !

It’s gotta be. Either that or Ripper literally is Clairo. I mean, Ripper’s literal first thread was about Clairo. Pretty sus. There seems to be some sort of agenda here.

I'm really struggling with this album. I'll give it another go tomorrow but my score is likely to bring the average down at this rate. It's just not for me.

That’s okay, I don’t care about the average score. I’m just glad I was able to share an album I like with others and that some people liked it. So far it’s gotten better reviews than I expected tbh. It’s alright that it’s not for you
