Aug 10, 2024 Favorite tracks: Why We Thugs, Smoke Some Weed, Doin' What It 'Pose 2Do, Go to Church Laugh Now, Cry Later is no doubt Ice Cube’s most popular and recognizable album for those who didn't grow up in the 80s or didn’t get to experience his early material first hand. While the album is a solid choice, I was hoping for something a little more original. Perhaps a dive into his earlier catalogue. Nonetheless, this album delivers undeniable classics like Why We Thugs and memorable bangers like Smoke Some Weed and Go to Church. But it also includes its fair share of filler tracks. Overall, it’s a solid record that offers a mix of hits and misses. 7.5/10 @AOTWClub
Aug 10, 2024 Ice Cube - Laugh Now, Cry Later To be honest I didn’t really didn’t know what to expect from this album. The only Cube album I had heard beforehand was Amerikkka’s Most Wanted, which i decided to relsiten to in preparation for this album. I still think it holds up, but considering the fact that there’s a 16 year difference between AMW and LNCL I didn’t know what I was in for. I know this is always a point in my reviews, but I really dug the production. Mid 2000’s Scott Storch, Lil Jon, Swizz Beatz etc. All of the beats were incredibly strong overall (Why We Thugs’s beat helps it be a great intro for the project) As for the lyrics, I thought they were good. A few highlights for me were “Growing Up” and “Laugh Now, Cry Later”. It’s a solid album overall but I do have to agree with what @Wreckless said about comparing this to Cube’s earlier work. AMW through Lethal Injection (you could also add in Straight Outta Compton if you want) is arguably one the most acclaimed runs in Hip- Hop so it’s inevitable that everything that comes after will be compared to those records. I’d say this applies to most rappers that have been active for a long amount of time though, so this doesn’t just apply to Cube. I enjoyed the record overall and there’s a few tracks that I’ll probably return to in the future. I’m also planning to finally listen to Death Certificate in the next few days and I can’t wait. Favorite Tracks: Why We Thugs, Doin’ What It ‘Pose To Do, The Game Lord, Steal The Show Rating: 7/10 @AOTWClub
Aug 11, 2024 Ah, it's such a shame to see such low scores for LNCL. To me, it's an absolute classic and I love each track as much as the others. It really is a 10/10 album to me and it's was great to see that Cube could bring the undeniable West Coast sound to a whole album, especially after his classic run when he first went solo. Early to mid 2000's were my prime time for hip-hop so that sound is engrained in my brain and this to me highlights exactly what that sounds was.
Aug 11, 2024 LNCL had a mix of West Coast and Southern tracks imo... The first half of the album is definitely waaay stronger than the second.
Aug 11, 2024 Album of the week: Seventh Son of a Seventh Son marks the end of Iron Maiden’s golden era. It’s a culmination of their creative peak. The album takes a more progressive approach compared to their earlier, straightforward heavy metal sound. It’s a concept album that delves into themes of prophecy, mysticism, and supernatural events. Enjoy @AOTWClub
Aug 11, 2024 @AOTWClub @Wreckless has Chosen Iron Maiden- Seventh son of a Seventh Son Stepdad enjoyer: 7.5/10 Ripperroo: 8/10 Justin Trudeau: 7/10 Yeez: 9/10 Jankland: 7.3/10 DiggleDogg69: 8.5/10 47.3/60 = 7.8 I will tally up Ice cube- Laugh Now, Cry Later on Tuesday, get your reviews in
Aug 11, 2024 I think I can make it to the Cube review before tuesday, also, I love me some Iron Maiden although I'm more of a casual listener
Aug 11, 2024 Picking one album is tough! I considered some lesser known albums from smaller bands but worried they would not be well received. On the flip side, picking a mainstream album like Meteora seemed too familiar. So I went with an Iron Maiden album, one of my favorite bands. This one is shorter, more melodic, and less heavy than some of their other releases, making it a good pick for casual listeners imo. Plus, it's one of their best albums but not as popular as Number of the Beast or Powerslave, so there's a good chance most haven't heard it.
Aug 11, 2024 Title: Ice Cube - Laugh Now, Cry Later Standouts: Why We Thugs, Go to Church, Laugh Now, Cry Later, Child Support Skips: The N***a Trapp, Doin' What It 'Pose 2Do, Stop Snitchin Score: 7/10 Final Thoughts: It was a solid comeback for the West Coast legend. It delivers that classic Ice Cube vibe; raw, aggressive, and straight to the point. The beats are heavy and match his commanding flow, especially on tracks like "Why We Thugs" and "Go to Church," where he mixes social commentary with his signature attitude. That said, while the album has some strong moments, it doesn't hit the level of his early classics. A few tracks feel a bit repetitive, and the overall sound could use a bit more variety. But if you're an Ice Cube fan or into West Coast hip-hop, this album has its moments and shows that Ice Cube still knows how to make his voice heard. @AOTWClub @Justin Trudeau
Aug 11, 2024 Sorry I've been missing reviews, work's been extremely hectic. Haven't had time to do anything else really.
Aug 11, 2024 @Justin Trudeau after Week 18 is completed, could we do a tiebreaker? There's currently a tie for #4 and a three-way tie for #5
Aug 11, 2024 I wasn't really worried about that but we could do a vote to give official standings instead of ties, once we get done all the weeks I'm just gonna restart the schedule again if everyone wants me too
Aug 11, 2024 The scores aren't meant to be competitive. They're just there to reflect the overall appreciation for each album.
