What I mean is like — he used to be so hated on all over Twitter and this forum but I almost never ever see people hate on him anymore cuz it's pretty much universally accepted he's one of modern rap's GOATs. Doesn't mean you have to like his music, but he's more-than earned respect for what he's accomplished imo.

I think you and @Wreckless have pretty similar tastes in music and if he found some stuff he liked in there I bet you could too. His discography is super expansive and covers everything from trap to traditional rapping to more pop-oriented stuff to country to reggae to acoustic to the experimental weirdo ATLien s---. There's a lot, and I don't expect the average person to like it all but I personally love p much all his styles lol.

For example I think the Thug song from the Carti record is boring but @Michael Myers finds it smooth, while MM finds "Harambe" grating and I think it's fire/a b-----r. @Ripper Roo and @DiggleDogg69 love So Much Fun while me and @albumdrill aren't that into it.

tldr; Carti is an artist I'd only recommend to specific people, but Thug I would recommend to almost everyone because there's likely at least a handful of songs they'll f--- with.

I'm curious tho, I know you like more "traditional" rappers (for lack of a better term), but are there any rappers/songs outside that sphere (or toe the line) you're into? Might be able to recommend some Thug songs you might like based on that.

Wasn’t BUSINESS IS BUSINESS mostly a bunch of old unreleased/leaked songs? So this is basically his first real album since 2021 d---

    Fair

I forgot to put quotes around "mumble" rap because I don’t use the term in a derogatory way. It’s just the best word I can think of that most people will understand. I’m mainly referring to the subgenre that became extremely popular around 2015-2018.

Good post btw. I like these types of discussions.

I talk about open mindedness in rap cuz it's the genre I know best by far and what I listen to the most. I'd be talking out my a--- if I was talking about open mindedness in say grunge for example — cuz my only real experience with the genre is Nirvana (apologies in advance for being a bad Seattleite lol). I've heard some Alice In Chains and Soundgarden and Stone Temple Pilots but never sat down and listened to a full album by any of them.

I'm open to recs from any genre really, but this forum is obviously super rap centric for better and for worse. But that's why I was intrigued by the mixtapes in @Justin Trudeau thread cuz just from skimming some of em it looked like a lot of them weren't rap centric at all. I have your playlist loaded up on Spotify btw, still gotta listen tho. I can't see anything ever overtaking rap as my favorite genre but I really do want to expand my taste in other genres a lot more. Like Punk for example is something I've always thought I would like a lot (in part cuz I always f----- with the Tony Hawk Pro Skater soundtracks LOL) but I don't know where to start lol. It's definitely on me for not making more effort — but if you have any good starting points for any scene or subgenre I'm always open to it like I said.

I've talked about how I think the term mumble rap is extremely reductive as naseum before so I won't get into it again other than to say I think putting Thug under that umbrella is especially reductive. I think the same when people call him trap, cuz while he has made trap songs for sure I never think of the average thug song as being trap. I also wouldn't consider Thug and his peers and offshoots a small subgenre either — Atlanta rap has been the dominant force in both the mainstream and underground for over a decade now, tho I think its chokehold has def faded a bit.

And yeah early Thug (the ICFN tales especially) sounds a lot like Wayne at times. Wayne is one of the greatest to ever do it — you can hear his DNA in everyone from Thug to Kendrick to Drake to Chance the Rapper, who all make very different types of rap so that's a huge testament to his influence. But all four of them have also carved their own lanes for sure.

I agree to an extent, but I think Thug can do a lot of different sounds (the songs I posted have a lot of different stuff too) and he's not your typical mumble rapper imo. He does have some stuff for everyone.

But the weirdo s--- is not for me either. I can understand for example enjoying some of it, but how anyone can enjoy songs like this

It's honestly no offence to people that do, anyone should listen to what they like. But I can't imagine people older than 16 not finding this f---ing embarrassing lmao

You often emphasize open mindedness toward mumble rap and encourage others to appreciate it as a deep, complex artform. I’d love to see you engage in discussions about other genres as well, since I rarely see that.

In the grand scheme of things, mumble rap is just a small, specific genre and many of us already listen to a wide range of music. So, we’re not really missing much by choosing not to deep dive into certain artists discographies.

Young Thug played an important role in this movement, though he also borrowed heavily from Lil Wayne in many ways. A lot of those guys have.

I’d say Slime Season is definitely worth listening to but I wouldn’t consider this genre essential to the point where skipping it means missing out on something major. But that also comes down to personl taste.

Whenever I think of music in 2019, I immediately think of So Much Fun. That summer was generational. For me, 2019 was Thug’s year

Absolutely hated his era of rap but Slime Season Is an album I can tolerate and actually enjoyed. The sequel had a few good songs too.
