    guess i'm not sure what you're getting at here. "focus on hooks in modern rap" isn't really a thing--hooks are no more or less important now than they ever were. and 50's particular style of hook isn't really in fashion.

    Rap hooks don't seem a lot more melodic to u nowadays compared to the 90s? Like, Hate Being Sober vs The Next Episode being an example of what I mean. Idk it seems like more and more rappers nowadays have a bit more melody to the hooks, and I've noticed it in rappers that have come after 50 more so than rappers before 50

    i think you're going to find so many examples and counter examples that you'll quickly realize you can't build a real narrative. Midnight Marauders came out in 93. earl is a thing now. there have always been rappers who lean heavily on hooks and/or sing and rappers who mostly eschew that. "rap today is all hooks" is something every conservative rap fan of every era has muttered under his breath. in fact, i think the last four years have seen a slew of genuine rap hooks make it to the forefront--even from keef, who you cite as support of things getting more melodic? he blew up off of "i dont like."

    I don't think overrating it is a good word when an album is out for a short time. More like overhyped (mmlp2, tpab). When they dropped people loved it, but a lot of people later changed their opinion. I think after a while you can decide whether an album is truly overrated or just got much hype when it dropped.
