Jul 18, 2015 Now I know what all of you are thinking. Why am I so late? Why am I posting this like y'all care? Why am i not using paragraphs? And to that, I say Anyway, I like Kendrick. I like him a lot. Section .80 and GKMC are honestly certified classics and I wish I could say the same thing about this album but if I'm gonna be honest, it didn't wow me honestly. In fact, by the end of his unhealthy obsession confirmation of Tupac outro, I just felt empty. Not because of the lyrics or anything but mainly because of the production, the way he was rapping on here in the second half and some parts of the first half if I'm being honest. When I first heard this album, I thought it was the worst thing I have ever heard. Now with this second full listen, I honestly feel a lot of the production is fantastic, I was loving almost all of it, the funk to the smooth jazz instrumentals, I was really enjoying it. Until Kendrick almost ruined it for me. Dont get me wrong, I'm not hating on Kendrick but a lot of the faults of this album for me is his doing honestly. The singing is what made me hate this album for a very long time and the way he tried to pull out concepts here was just honestly really weak compared to his older work (with the exception of 'u' which is debatably my favorite track on here) you can post a bunch of novel type replies explaining every little detail about every song and its concept and at the end of the day, I still wont like tracks like Momma, The Blacker The Berry, Mortal Man, Hood Politics, For Free?, or even Thru These Walls because at the end of the day, I get it. I just dont like it. To me he didn't pull them off at all and just came off as corny. Then there are tracks that just really started feeling bland like How Much A Dollar Cost and For Sale? which were mainly skippable to me. I will say however there are a lot more tracks I liked than that I disliked but the problem is, I only liked them for the production and with the exception of 3 songs, felt were either half good and half bad. I liked the poem concept how he recited bits and pieces of it where it ties in to the songs themes but honestly I'm gonna say this. I dont care who you are, but talking to samples is the most corniest thing you can do. And the biggest cliche to top it off, have it be Tupac of all people. So over all, I feel exhausted after listening to this, both mentally and physically, I still feel that are Control Kendrick was the best Kendrick and while this album is a nice try at topping GKMC, it doesn't quite reach the mark like say, Lupe Fiasco or A$AP Rocky hit when they try and top their best work. Overall I'd give this a 5.7/10. Anyway this is just my opinion. My brutally honest opinion. EDIT:the later half grew on me so all of this is irrelevant
Jul 18, 2015 this is cool and everything but different people view the album differently, just wasnt your cup of tea, id rate the album 8.5/10 neither of us are correct so.. personal album reviews just never seem to work since everyone views music differently
Jul 18, 2015 very gladly disagree. this MFer is really salty about kendrick. every thread I see is negative and about kenny starting to think you're the rapper he "ripped off"
