Sep 14, 2015How dare you be rude to me. Lollipop spent 5 non-consecutive weeks atop the Billboard Hot 100 chart. It sold tens of millions of copies and was recognized by Rolling Stone as the #1 song of 2008. It solidified Wayne's crossover success in a similar way to how In Da Club did for 50. Now, granted, Lifestyle was successful too -- but i don't think its unreasonable to say thug/quan aren't the rap superstars wayne was. Two different periods for rap, two diff levels of success. "go home" i f---ing am home. roll the dice
and @Narsh i c u lil cocksucking twerp, have a debate without co-signing paul for once, medium talent

yikes the standom from @WPG and @Narsh is a bit out of hand. at least with paul you know this is his horse in a race -- critics need to champion certain artists to convey clout... but narshus jesus, remove the multiple testies from your mouth bruh. if this was any other artist, im sure there'd be more of an even hand (well maybe not narsh, who is incapable of having an opinion that isnt insane enthusiasm)
paul, im sure you've heard how certain standups are "comics comics" -- the colin quinns of the world, etc. guys other comedians value, but has never really tapped into the zeitgeist, a la pryor or carlin or even bill burr. isn't there a similar development in rap? mock me if you want, but im trying to touch on Fundamental Truths about the Nature Of ArtOrdinary Joel, Slyk, Section80 and 2 others like this.(This ad goes away when signing up) -

it's hard to say. creatively, thug right now has to remind you of 2006-08 wayne; wayne came back down to earth as an artist and is still one of the biggest stars in music.
two obvious differences: wayne was rapping and steadily building a national profile for almost a decade before that happened; by the time he started the tear, he was a semi-regular on mtv and at clear channel. he also spun all the mixtape hype into massive commercial success. people are coming around on thug, but there's no way he sells a million albums in a week this year or next year--or even what a million in 2008 would equate to when adjusting for deflation.
the cynic in me thinks thug only keeps his cache as long as his music is this good. but the guy really does have an ear for pop hits, and if you string out a few of those solo, you could guarantee yourself a pension, so to speak.
i think we'll be able to better judge this after the album comes out, which scares me, since 300 is such a mess.CSW, bread, Narsh and 1 other person like this. -
