Sep 18, 2015 Young Thug makes (or at least raps over on his solo albums/tapes) trap or trap-influenced production that I find mostly mediocre. Is that too much of a stretch to make (excluding the mediocre part)?
Sep 18, 2015 So @Narsh, are you trying to tell me there are no trap influences whatsoever in Young Thug's music? And I don't hate trap music, it isn't my usual cup of tea but it can be done well with the right artists/producers.
Sep 18, 2015 It isn't straight up trap but there's definitely trap influences (mainly those signature trap drums that pop up throughout the song). Trap/trap-influenced isn't inherently bad, if that's what it seems like I'm implying. I think the only songs I can recall off the top of my head that are the least/not trap inspired are probably "I Know There's Gonna Be (Good Times)" and "Paradise." It's just that to me, he generally goes over mediocre production that happens to be trap/trap-influenced. If he made an entire album full of "Maria I'm Drunk"'s or "Paradise"'s, I'd probably really enjoy it as he holds my attention more (like most rappers and artist) when the production is to my liking. So, confirm or deny this statement: There are no trap influences whatsoever in any of Young Thug's music.
Sep 18, 2015 Obviously there are influences. Doesn't make you any less ignorant for labeling it all as trap music and also using that as your primary critique for projects a such as b6 smh.
Sep 18, 2015 It's a description of the production. Saying it's just hip-hop production is too g.d. vague. Just like how I'd say the trap influenced production DS2 is very good. It's not a description of badness, it's a description of sound/style.
Sep 18, 2015 But this is stemming form you using it as a way to discredit b6, which was just genuinely off base (considering a majority of b6 isn't "medicore trap" like you claimed). And when you're asked to explain why certain songs are, you say you don't have the time to discuss an album you don't like. Lmao.
Sep 18, 2015 I can explain an album I don't like just fine, it's just that usually having a recent listen you can explain more. And I'm not about to go listen to B6 again to get you to shut the f--- up about me disliking it and having me go into absolute detail about why I dislike it otherwise my opinion is inherently wrong. I didn't like the production on most songs (exceptions going to With That, Check, and maybe Halftime since I liked With That a lot and Check was fun) and I think Young Thug has a unique style but no matter how unique you are, you're not gonna sound good over mediocre production. I can't go into too much detail to an album I listened to four months ago only a few times. It wasn't an album like Currents by Tame Impala for example. I wasn't forcing myself to review Barter 6, so I gave it a few listens, decided I didn't like it and moved on. It didn't interest me all that much unlike Currents, which despite me disliking it, was really interesting to look into for it's baffling lyrics/themes and also I had to review it for my podcast.
Sep 18, 2015 "so so mixtape quality tracks" ????????????????????????????????????? most of these songs are almost album worthy "one dimensional" ? are you KIDDING ME???!!!!?????
Sep 18, 2015 Don't mean to pull the "subjective" card (we all know @WPG loves that), but generally my music tastes skew somewhat experimental and Barter 6 lacked this overall. Mediocre to me, good to you, no one's wrong.
Sep 18, 2015 You literally haven't touched on more than 1 track we've provided you as examples of the production not being mediocre. Stop generalizing. I'm not saying you DIDNT hear some beats you didn't dig or thought were "mediocre" but your overall critique is blatantly misinformed
Sep 18, 2015 Misinformed or do you just disagree? I've already said there's some really well-produced songs Thug has been on but the bad/mediocre outweighs the good from what I've heard from him. Our general music tastes are different. I'm all for discussing music (in fact I love it so much I started a podcast for it), but it's obvious you don't respect me in these discussions, so why should I respect you?
Sep 18, 2015 Hercules, hercules f---s sake, you've actually managed to turn me into a Thug fan. This song would k--- it on the radio.
