Oct 31, 2015 I'm sure you guys are familiar with it...I can't count the times I've seen serious conversations about people discussing Kanye's work, citing great production and music but denouncing his writing capability... When in reality, this is just incorrect Is he the greatest lyricist of all time? Nah...consistently, he's probably not top level across his discog. Fair game. But to hear the (surprisingly immensely popular) opinion, and misconception, that My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy is a great piece of music held back by it's bad lyricism...what? Kanye doesn't rap about raping women and killing people in cartoonish ways with lots of rhymes...the people that enjoy the work of modern-day Eminem for this, apparently (I'm guessing), seem to enjoy stating that Kanye himself does a bad job on arguably his best works and one of the best of all time, MBDTF. Well...I'll have you know, I was listening to MBDTF the other day at work...first time in awhile, actually. This opinion came to mind, and I was caught looking like this; "U gotta be kiddin me, dog!" The second track..Gorgeous, has some of the most killer lines you'll hear...this is not in your face aggressive 'lyricism' by the conventional term....people fail to realize it's genius. MBDTF has tons of great verses on it. You don't have to use huge words and crazy rhyme schemes to spit great lyricism in your raps. This second verse is stuffed full of impactful, thoughtful, and well written lines. Is hip hop just a euphemism for a new religion? Oct 31, 2015 everyone's interpretation of what a good lyricist is....is different i don't think kanye is that great at rapping, especially compared to some of the all time greats that said, I DO think he's a very good artist and he has other strengths that make up for him not being the best at rapping
