before people sensationalize this more than it asks to be, it's more about the media's echo chamber than about the album itself. but it's true: the record is admirable, but not that good, and certainly not enjoyable.

It's not something I find myself coming back to all that often anymore, but I still think portions of the record are great.

As most of you probably remember, I thought it was amazing when I first heard it—part of this is due to my own misreading of the album, part is due to the fact that I had an unreleased record of one of the most famous rappers in the world and didn't know how to go about handling it. There was a lot of pressure there: TDE knew we had it, I was writing the first full preview of it on the internet, I was writing a review after the fact and had only written like three rap reviews in my life prior to that, Punch was going to (and did) tweet it out, Elliot Wilson RT'd my preview. Don't get me wrong, it was a cool as f--- experience and I'll be forever grateful that @Koolo trusted me with that kind of responsibility...but at this point I disagree with a lot of what I wrote. I felt kind of pressured to give it a higher score knowing that people at TDE were going to read it.

Anyway, I'm not trying to shirk responsibility in regard to what I had originally said and wrote about it. The hype train was real and I was new to rap criticism (still am), but in the end, I can't really blame anyone but myself. It's still one of my fondest memories of sxn80, so it'll always have a special place in my heart for that reason.

To say that you didn't enjoy TPAB; okay I can see why some people think that

But to say he is overrated?
Hasn't made a good song since 'Swimming pools'?

    Swimming Pools?

Out of all the songs you say Swimming Pools n-----?

Complex question why everyone claimed to have enjoyed Kendrick's jazz album.

I still don't understand how people class tpab as a 'boring' listen,
What i hear is great melodic flows and instrumentals with catchy rhythms, there are more then a couple of catchy a--- hooks and danceable beats,

Is it just the fact that it has a jazz sound to it? You could argue that unlike S80 it's too dense, but that just adds enjoyability and replay ability to it imo and i dont see why it wouldnt... What makes this album different to gkmc? Because personally i still spin this about once every week or two

For the people that didn't read the review above

TDLR: Album is great but boring.

I don't know what to say about this. I will say that TPAB just isn't a album you revisit every day or you can put on repeat.
I mean I certainly wasn't bored on the first listen. The few listens after that I slowly started to lose interest. ( but to be honest I was at my 7th listen and I haven't played anything else) The thing with this replay value and 'enjoyable' thing is that everyone has a different sense of what is enjoyable and what is not, some people may actually find the album entertaining and have kept it on rotation since it dropped. I mean I definitely think that Kendrick didn't aim for this album to BE enjoyable to most listeners, It's like he constructed the album as a book. A classic one. But once you finish reading it, are you going to pick it back up and re-read it immediately? Nah son. You just gotta let that s--- sit in your library and wait a few months before diving back in.
Is Kendrick wrong for constructing his album this way? Maybe I mean not many people are into reading books tbh. Maybe Kendrick's album was a one time experience type of things and as that review pointed out. must critics reviewed that s--- after first listen.
I still think this is a great album tho the word 'boring' and 'replay value' aint gonna change my score

    EDIT:

The article is almost as trash as the tittle itself

    Writer should have just said:
People reviewed the album to early
I think the album is good but boring

Why he had to write all that block of text for? The article is more about shi--ing on critics then actually taking about the album

honestly tpab may be kendrick's most enjoyable album. gkmc is clearly superior but it's a bit too heavy for a casual listen and he was still developing as an artist on section 80. I feel like the people that have turned on tpab are just reacting to the fans that think this is "the greatest album of all-time" and aren't really judging the album itself. or maybe I'm wrong and I just genuinely enjoy a "boring" album. still album of the year for me tbh.

granted it isnt for everyone, but if you value him as an mc, and you like the messages he talks about, there is no reason to not play this over and over again

Lol narsh I may be wrong but perry was saying you ignoring me - one of the most thoughtful, good looking, accomplished members here - is patently absurd. youre incapable of criticism, and worse... deeply immature. no loss if you ignore me lol. i find your conversation extremely annoying, as ive established
