Charles Barkley said something last night on TNT along the lines of, "if Deandre couldn't dunk and you left him in the gym all night, how many points would he have in the morning?" This got me thinking that one of the main reasons the Clips will never seriously be in title contention is because they're paying 87 million to a guy who is severely limited.

Naturally I thought of another overpaid player on a contender, Tristan Thompson. He's the 3rd big on their team and is getting 82 million over 5 years. Imagine if they'd spent that money on some good rotation wings.

Their salaries are close, and their career numbers are very similar.

    Deandre Jordan
    PPG: 8.1, Rebounds: 9.1, Blocks: 1.8, FG: 66%, FT: 41%

    Tristan Thompson
    PPG: 10.1, Rebounds: 5.1, Blocks: 0.7, FG: 49%, FT: 63%

T.T. is more overpaid, but he's LeBron's guy so he got paid - simple as that.
I don't even think Deandre is overpaid TBH. One of the best defensive players in the league

DeAndre isn't that overpaid. His impact on the defensive end is something only a few guys in the league can bring. And his athleticism to run the floor and catch high oops from anyone on the Clips are all reasons he's so valuable to them. There's a reason the Clippers did absolutely everything they could to get DeAndre to back out of his contract in Dallas, he's an irreplaceable talent.

His defense and rebounding make up for his lack of scoring and FT percentage IMO.

My main reason for saying Deandre is overpaid is because of the team he's on. He's not a bad player, but that team will never get over the hump when it's 3rd best and 3rd highest paid player can't score unless he's spoon fed lobs. He's great on defense, very athletic, but I don't think that merits a 90 million dollar contract.

you're right, it doesn't deserve 90mil, but they had to do it to keep him, and it was worth it imo. what are they without him? do they wait a year and offer whiteside the max next year? who do they get? (i'd probably have deandre over whiteside btw)

it's very rare you have a big man as good as deandre jordan and since there's so few of them in the league, you see them all get so overpaid

I agree, but if I was them I'd have worked out a sign & trade with Dallas, maybe create a trade exception? The Clips are desperate for consistency on the wings. They have a lot of decent guys, but nobody that you can give the ball to with 2 minutes left and go to work (besides CP3).

I would take him on the Celtics at that number in a second, especially with the cap going up again next year.

Anyways TT is your answer. DJ is another guy I would take on my team at that number in a second.

TT for sure. Way too much money for one guy who's nothing more than a bench/role player.

Lol this guy really gonna try and act like these 2 are even comparable. Tristian Thompson coming off the bench behind K Love and Mozgov. You don't pay a bench player 5 years, 82 mill.

He wasn't the 3rd best player on that team and definitely wasn't getting paid like it.

2nd or 3rd. Great defense, master rebounder, super athletic, excellent in a supporting role.... like Deandre Jordan. Pretty straight forward comparison.

Deandre Jordan isn't over paid at all. At the end of last year he was with ease the best rebounder in the league and you can still make a case for that today. He is tremendous on defense and is one of the better shot blockers in the league. It's not just about offense. Clippers have plenty of that. Deepest team in the league in my opinion, and that's mostly offensive-wise. Deandre Jordan fits into LA's play style.

Tristan Thompson is over paid, but I understand why they gave him so much money. He was a rising star who had been playing well on one of the best teams in the league with the best player on the planet. He was the second best rebounder in the league to me. You're crazy if you didn't think he was in for a career year.
Still the best offensive rebounders in the league.

Agree about the comparison & description, but it was Isiah, Dumars, Dantley, Aguire.

I do think TT is the more overpaid player, but when I watch the Clips I feel that the money spent on Denadre would be better served on otther positions.

Rodman succeeded Mahorn and became the defensive player of the year, the most accurate shooter in the game, and averaged close to 10 rebounds a game en route to the Pistons taking the finals. Rank him 5th if you want, but that 5th is better than most team's 3rd.

Yeah TT is more overpaid. DJ has a much bigger role for the Clippers than TT has for the Cavs.
