Nov 26, 2015 Lil Wayne and Boosie is redundant. Your old lists would have Kanye, Slug, & Budden. Now you're too cool for that I suppose. This is your safest list yet.
Nov 26, 2015 Never understood the appeal of Boosie, there's a few songs here and there from him I like but other than that can't get into him. Killa Cam is GOAT though
Nov 26, 2015 if you think lil wayne and boosie are redundant you're going to have to bow out of this discussion. but kanye is in my top 12. slug is in my top ~30 or 40. budden fell off too egregiously and put out too much music after falling off. (my opinion of his 2002-2008 music has not changed; he was never in my top ten regardless.) as usual, you're trying awfully hard to posture without really knowing what you're talking about. it's an uphill battle to argue that a list with biggie, pac, nas, jay, and andre is trying to be avant-garde. go make yourself another plate.
Nov 26, 2015 ah, you edited this post after i quoted it. "too cool" and too safe? is it black girl lost or shorty owe you for ice?
Nov 26, 2015 Doh yeah I meant Come Home With Me. Re: kanye v boosie, what is your criteria for this list? I'm not as well versed in Boosie's music but I'm interested in hearing an argument as to why he deserves a top ten spot over yeezy (especially when you've been a vocal supporter of Ye for so long...at least formerly). Hard for me to put one half of outkast on a top 10 list without the other. I would want to put Q-Tip on a top 10 (or at least 20) list as well but it's hard to rank him without the other two thirds of Tribe. tbh I remember Budden being in at least one of your top ten lists.
Nov 26, 2015 couple of questions. downloading a bunch of music cuz i can torrent while im back home for break. where to start for: ghostface killah cam mf doom andre (haven't heard a lot of outkast or his solo stuff outside of their hits)
Nov 26, 2015 like i said re: jay and nas, it's mostly splitting hairs, kanye is one of the greatest rappers of all time, and is no lower any day of the week than 11 or 12. but: starting with Ghetto Stories and continuing uninterrupted (except by jail, obviously) through the present day, boosie is what would happen if pac had been dropped into a more hopeless upbringing. it's like what they say about training big dogs: you don't ever have to hit them, as long as they believe you one day might. his vicious songs are more vicious than anyone else's, but his earnest ones are at the top of their niche, too. and he's done both with a unifying aesthetic in the way no one else--including pac, if we're being honest--has been able to do. speaking microscopically: he's the most unpredictable writer i can think of, on a line-by-line basis. he'll weave in and out of the fourth wall, like on the mixtape version of "like a bird," when he opens "my first album was 'bout a 7, but i talked me some s---," then seeps back into a present-tense narrative.
Nov 26, 2015 Wayne Biggie Pac Andre Run DMC Nas Ice Cube Gucci Mane T.I Eminem/Kanye *Thug for HM because he will be top 10 eventually
Nov 26, 2015 Kanye is a top 10 rapper of all time for me, and here's why. When you compare his technical ability to someone like Jay-Z, it's very clear who wins that debate. But there is no rubric for what constitutes a great rapper, and this is especially true when you evaluate an artist like Kanye. Both he and Jay are great rappers, but for different reasons. The reason I think Kanye is a great rapper is because his personality shines through on every single song he puts out. When you listen to a song like All Falls Down, or Heartless, or POWER, or Hold My Liquor, you're as drawn to Kanye the person as you are the music itself. I think that's rare, and unique to only a handful of artists. Tupac is another one who is similar in that regard. So back to my point, his technical ability may not be as impressive as someone like Hov, but his performance and personality is one of the best in the history of the genre. Kanye is my favourite artist (and rapper) of all time, and no one really comes close to me. @WPG your list is really good though, hard to argue against too much of that. It's safe but informed.
Nov 26, 2015 He clearly doesn't want to have a discussion. His tastes have clearly changed drastically. Anybody who was on SL remembers his Slug and Kanye fanaticism.
Nov 26, 2015 ice cube should be mentioned in more of these discussions. i think gucci is top 30 or 35 ever, but i don't know if he has a mixtape that would rank with the best work from any of these eleven guys. the greatness is spread out even more than it was with wayne.
Nov 26, 2015 i overrated slug because i was 16 and from minneapolis. kanye is in my top 12 all time and could go higher if he continues to put out music at or near the level of Yeezus. becoming more informed on music and its history is something we should all strive for, not something we should scoff at like dogmatic politicians. or do you want to tell me again about how g-funk isn't from los angeles?
