Nov 26, 2015 no need to be pedantic about it. When you say MBDTF isn't a classic, there is no context there so i have no idea what makes you form that opinion. Asking for an example of an album you consider classic gives me context, so i can understand why you feel that way. Now that I have this context, I understand the reason you don't think MBDTF is a classic is because you have formed in your own mind what hip-hop "should" sound like. It's pretty clear when every album you listed is very 'gangsta rap' that you don't actually understand what an objective classic is. It's pretty clear that you only like gangsta rap, so i don't know why you are in this thread. There's more to rap than just "ah skeet skeet bung b--- " AND f---ing LMAO AT PUTTING A CHINO XL ALBUM OVER MBDTF
Nov 26, 2015 How were they influenced by Eminem? I'm not saying you're wrong, just don't see the connection at all.
Nov 26, 2015 well now you really aren't making any sense. Not every album I listed is gangsta rap. "Los Angeles" by Flying Lotus is not gangsta rap. Neither is liquid swords. or planet shrooms. or heavy mental. So I'm not sure why you have to throw accusations around when you don't have your facts straight. I think you're probably getting the wrong impression, I like hip hop of all kinds and I made that clear in the past, anybody that knows me from SL knows that I like everything. Just not a fan of MBDTF and I think it's far from a classic.. to be honest the hip hop that you're trying to describe here is far from the kind of hip hop that i listen to lol
Nov 26, 2015 j. cole's mixtape days were very much inspired by eminem, particularly the warm up (listen to dreams). as for kendrick, "black boy fly" was probably recorded directly after listening to the mmlp or tes. "good kid" and "sing about me" definitely have eminem elements to them as well.
Nov 26, 2015 Very solid list, although I woulda put Ye or Pusha instead of Nas Boosie a legend but I'd swap him for Gucci. Also s/o OP for posting my fav Hov song
Nov 26, 2015 No i'm saying you give off that "i only listen to REAL hip-hop" vibe, which is why you dismiss MBDTF. i said your list is 'very gangsta rap' because it is. Not every album, but most. No idea how you could with an open mind just dismiss MBDTF
Nov 26, 2015 Solid list but why boosie? Never could get into his material and From what I've listened to nothing really blew my mind
Nov 26, 2015 Wait so which is it is it "real hip hop" which is a stupid label anyway, or "ah skeet skeet bung b---" you're all over the place. You have no idea what I even listen to. I just named a number of albums that I consider classics. That doesn't mean that it's all I listen to, I listen to a VARIETY of hip hop. MBDTF to me is just way overrated, its a good album but I'd never put it in the classic territory
Nov 26, 2015 I'm just saying you give off a strong vibe of "I only listen to real hip-hop" yeah ok you listen to more stuff than what you posted and i was wrong ok. But how about this, got an album from the last 5 or so years, that's a classic in your opinion? cuz all i can see is pinata and GKMC which is very hot take.
Nov 26, 2015 I referred to Z Ro and UGK as Houston rappers a week ago and you knew exactly what I meant.
Nov 26, 2015 sonically "black boy fly" was clearly birthed from listening to eminem--the drums, the chorus, I don't know how you could argue otherwise tbh. and then for "dreams" the whole storytelling of stalking a girl then murdering her bf just so he can date her is about as eminem as it gets. i mean j. cole/kendrick have admitted this in numerous interviews--I'm not really pulling this out of thin air lol
Nov 26, 2015 Yeah I can get the J.Cole Dreams influence, but still I don't think it's that strong of an influence. What you said about Black boy fly i disagree with completely. I don't see how Eminem could have possibly influenced that song at all. Sonically or otherwise. It's a song about Kendrick's ghetto-idols and how he looked up to them. I think the best way I can put it is, If Eminem never existed, I'm pretty sure Black Boy Fly would be the exact same song it is today.
Nov 26, 2015 lol I know what the song's about. I just don't understand how you can listen to the first 30 seconds of that song and not immediately think of '02 eminem. I explicitly remember that was everybody's initial reaction when gkmc first leaked on SL.
Nov 26, 2015 I think if you isolate MDBTF and compare it only to albums 2010-2015 then it indeed stacks up well. You can call it a modern classic because musically it's really good. The production is really good on every track. I just wouldn't put it up their with the top tier classics. just my view. I'd say that pinata, gkmc, planet shrooms are classics. prehistoric till death by Azizi Gibson is a borderline one. Mista Thug Isolation is at that level. but yeah not too many that I would put at the "CLASSIC" level
