Only when it's self defense, and you feel like physically defending yourself (ie: hitting back) is the only option. Or if someone you know is in serious danger due to them & you NEED to attack them to set the person free or whatever. Aside from that, all violence is unneccesary, regardless of gender, as @Ordinary Joel already said.
