It has nothing to do with the fans... tpab is the highest rated album of all time and most of those who gave it a perfect score aren't even kendrick fans.

it is possible to have a critically acclaim album that the casual people hate

thats because the new mainstream listeners aren't used to this sound, it was widely considered as GOAT years ago and thats why a lot of old head can really appreciate it

if you ask me, nothing that dropped these last few years can compare to TPAB, quality wise... and as far as my enjoyment go, tpab is one of my most played albums of all time (already) but then again I'm almost 30, I'm not new to this kind of sound.

it is also the highest rated of the decade on rateyourmusic and thats not a critic site, its a list generated by thousand of people's ratings.

    And that's just an example.

The hate only come because kendrick did something more jazzy that the mainstream listeners were never going to get into... but that doesn't take anything away from the album as it has some of the best jazz elements in music history.

There's no other side of the coin if we're being honest. The hate only come because kendrick did something more jazzy that the mainstream listeners were never going to get into... but that doesn't take anything away from the album as it has some of the best jazz elements in music history.

A lot of rock fans don't like James brown but it doesn't make his albums any less goat.

    EXACTLY.

Like musician klp said a few weeks ago, the reason it is universally acclaimed by critics is because you can't criticze this album, there's no apparent flaw. It was, like complex said, a "critic-proof" album. You don't have to enjoy it, but there's no way you can say it isn't better than gkmc because it is much better than GKMC.

    This.

I was talking about it with Talib kweli the other day but it is what it is. The thing is, some people just hate the fact that they're not qualified to talk about something they don't know s--- about. They just hate the fact that kendrick did something incredible, but in another genre and they're not qualified to talk about it. If they like it thats fine, if they don't like it thats also fine, but their opinion will not take anything away from the incredible piece of work that is tpab because objectively, this album is pure art.

But then again, this is exactly the Kanye-syndrome, you just can't box them in a box named "hip hop" or "do this or do that", you also can't blame these 16-yo kids who can't make the difference between "my favorite" and "the best"

tbh I still don't like GKMC at all. However, TPAB is a thing of beauty. I also like OD a lot :sweatt:

I probably prefer GKMC over TPAB because it's more approachable/easier to listen but TPAB is the more consistent project. Compton and The Recipe while good tracks never amazed me. It seemed like Kendrick just threw in those tracks to get a Dre feature in there.

You just said "this is not what I wanted from kendrick", implying you're referring to your personal tastes.

Do you like gkmc more? thats fine
do you think gkmc is better? well, good luck to find solid arguments for that s---.

Personally I listen to tpab a lot more than gkmc but this is not the reason why I think tpab is just head and shoulders above gkmc.

TPAB is trash said this from day 1 it's all about execution the way Kendrick, Talib Kweli, Nas, Joe Budden, Canibus, Jay Z (the minority songs he has with a message), Mos Def, Common, Lupe Fiasco, Royce, Jay Electronica, Kanye West, RZA, J Cole, Andre 3000, Cormega, Killer Mike, Rakim, KRS-One, Reakwon execute their substance is really boring to listen to

Though i respect they are traditional spitters and the best technical lyricists besides Kanye for the hip hop head listener. Mainly a male fan base

Say what u want about Eminem, B.o.B, Drake, Rich Homie Quan there is a reason they appeal so much to pop fans, females, fans that like catchy music because their substance is executed in the most ear pleasing and catchy way

Pretty much what Enigma said, I don't know which one I like more, I probably enjoy both equally but there's no doubt in my mind that TPAB is better.

As a musician myself, I have a hard time finding musical flaws on tpab, I can't say the same about gkmc.

it might sound funny at first but this is right. I'm confident that people with certain degree of musical knowledge has already said tpab > gkmc
