Jan 12, 2016 meh why be so declarative? ive seen rap that certainly feels like it's closer to slam poetry or whatever than 'actual' musicianship. it's somewhat silly, as we've discussed how rap is essentially modern blues... but i think its ok to describe certain rappers differently. nas IS a great poet, but he's also quite literally the son of a great bluesman. by the same token, when you see pop rappers on mtv doing a guest spot on a reality show or a panel... maybe im off base but i don't think of them as a musician per se. they're a personality.
Jan 12, 2016 who are you, a quirky teach for america try-hard who teaches poor kids the error of their ways? don't be dense. writing music and writing poetry are not the same thing. there's crossover, just as writing about a murder trial is sort of similar to writing a children's book. saying that rap is poetry does a disservice to rap and poetry.
