The core mentality in hip hop that has people assuming that the genre needs to be about certain specific topics and needs to sound a certain way to be considered rap

on the real tho, it's cause young thug has ADD and even tho u and others say that's what makes him great because he celebrates tragedy with happiness, king troup isn't as purposefully delivered as any of kendrick's (boring) tracks.

people are shifting from this breh. I realize its still there somewhat but not nearly as much as it once was. Kanye has literally broken all rules in hip hop to make it easier for a bunch of artists to veer away from conventional rap standards. Listen to the kids, bro.

Yeah idk it could be my own bias like you're saying or lack of knowledge w the type of resistance progression in various genres faced

But I'd like to think hip hop is more unique than a lot of genres. It's foundations were so simple that it now allows SO much room for experimentation and progression. When other genres progressed, you'd get a break where a new genre or sub genre would be formed. Like the punk movement. But with rap, you can go from boom bap to ringtone rap and still have it all be under the same umbrella. And instead of embracing the freedom, a lot of people seem to be actively opposed to it

Like I understand that punk is still a subgenre of Rock, and that hip hop is developing its own subgenres over time. But I don't think those distinctions are necessary. Idk maybe they are tho, maybe we need "trap" or whatever to break off from what people consider "normal" rap etc

    I hate that thought tho

I know I used thug in the OP but I didn't mean for this to became about "trap" or whatever

Wayne was facing the same kind of backlash when he was innovating. And so on

Ye you basically have to be an already established artist or have a huge consign to be able to innovate and even then, you'll still get backlash

I agree that trap is becoming more accepted now but I still think it's viewed as a lesser sub-genre. Like I have friends who love listening to Future, Thugger, Migos etc. but when it comes discussing the best rap artists out, those names are never mentioned. You get the typical Cole, Kendrick, Eminem response. I remember bringing that up once and their response was "well, future and them don't really rap about much."

lmao i actually just did a case study on apple centered around innovation yesterday. Something "new" will almost always have mixed reactions. Just how the world works. Theres open-minded people in general and there are close-minded people. Not specifically the genre.
