Why is hip hop so narrow minded?

it took me YEARS to pull my dad out of this mindset with a lot of things, but he still usually hates stuff if it's anything related to hip hop/rap/rnb

i've known a lot of people who think music isn't REAL music if it doesn't have live instrumentation in it, and it makes me want to punch them in the throat

Hip-Hop has been segregated into many cultures. The underground culture, the cool culture, the mainstream culture and the heads who appreciate it all. It's hard because these cultures create different music and the music often clashes with the cultures. I've seen trap conflict with boom bap and etc. I make all kinds of music but it's a shame that cultures are clashing with each other and certain cultures are also dying out. Hip-hop heads shouldn't have to war with each other just to prove which one is most influential, all of them can exist. Hip-hop is supposed to be forward thinking but it's a shame this segregation is backwards thinking. It's like they're trying to make hip-hop into a generic genre, and that saddens me because hip-hop is supposed to be innovative; innovation drove hip-hop and now the lack of innovation is driving it back, sad.

Hip-hop is narrow minded but it could be so much more.

I don't really know where you're coming from dude, hip hop is a super diverse genre, with the fact that you get people like thug as well as kendrick at the same time period just being proof of that.

It's because of how big the genre is that people can be "real hip hop" fans only or just trap heads

And hip hop culture also takes a lot from a bunch of different places, e.g. there's so much metal and rock in rap it's crazy

The fact that Young Thug has a career means Rap music is very accepting. You want KRS-One to kiss his a--- or something? I think the dude who didn't want to rap over DJ Premier's beat on Hot 97 brought up a good point. That's not his sound, that's not who he caters to and that's not the producer his fans expect him to use. Lots of people in Rap music disagree. What's popping now commercially, will be viewed as dust in a few years. The people who are in their teens now will be the old timers when they reach their late 20's, early 30's. Rap is youth oriented and for that reason there will always be a generational clash. I've had conversations with young people who won't listen to Rap before the year 2005 and older people who stopped listening to Rap in the early 90's. This isn't a genre that will ever reach a general consensus across generations. It's not designed for that.

personally I think most older stuff (pre 2008ish when the Internet allowed the genre to become watered down) was better. It's hard for me to want rap to continue evolving because for the most part it's been a negative path (obviously this is just an opinion, I'm sure tons disagree). To me rap was sort of the one genre where you were supposed to put thought and time into constructing the lyrics and it's strayed from that for the most part. The elite artists in rap (sales and general consensus) all had a unique lyrical gift. Outside of a few big rappers today, I just don't see it. It's a lot of repetitive garbage over similar sounding beats. It's so watered down and has degressed imo.

The generational point posted above this post is also incredibly true. It's personal preference at the end of the day. I just appreciate the skill needed to construct masterfully written verses a lot more than someone throwing together a catchy melody and using God knows how many computer alterations to enhance their voice. As someone who's attempted to rap I find the former much harder and easier to respect than the latter.

Yeah this is a perfect example of the mentality I'm referring to in my OP

I respect the fact that you like certain styles over others but why discredit what's going on now? What makes you're inital assumption of what hip hop should be the end all?

See this is why you get into an argument in nearly every thread you're in. I stated very clearly that it was strictly my opinion, no one has to follow suit (and many don't). I also gave my reasoning as to why I think the style I prefer is better. That doesn't mean you or anyone else has to agree, it's just the way I view the situation.

Also not just hating on new stuff because I like to, I genuinely feel it's way too easy to hop on whatever is popular and roll with it. Contrary to what you're probably thinking I respect the h--- out of artists like thug who are pushing into their own lane. I may not love the music but the originality of it is brilliant

I stated that. Plain and simple from having tried both sonically driven rapping and content driven rapping I think it's a lot harder to do what, say Joe budden does than what future does. Thus I deem him a better rapper

And to blend the two together and throw in an incredible gift for flow/delivery/originality/importance is why I would crown Em (1999-03 in particular) as the greatest to ever do it.

One could say that this is exactly what you're doing tbh.

You make it seem like it's impossible not to enjoy young thug's music.
