May 15, 2016 TES is em's best work just look at the f---ing tracklist. I bet alot of people here smack eminem around because he gave them TES and then followed it up with encore, relapse and recovery. TES and mmlp are why he is considered goat.
May 15, 2016 there's no way of "objectively" judging music quality tho every reason you could come up with for why a song/artist/album is good or bad is going to be based on an opinion of what makes something good/bad
May 15, 2016 So you're saying that if someone likes an album that is nonstop farts for 55 minutes, then it's actually good as long as he/she likes it? Nah.
May 15, 2016 i'm saying nothing is good/bad in music as music has no inherent value, only the value people project onto it based on their feelings about it and if someone liked a 55 minute fart album, good on them. it's irrelevant
May 15, 2016 I mean there's no point in arguing with you as I've seen you talk about this before and you're stuck in your ways for better or worse. But, like, there isn't music that you enjoy but at the same time can acknowledge it's pretty bad? Or vice versa? For example, I'm not that big into rock, aside from the classic songs, but I don't write the whole genre off as bad music just because I don't like it.
May 15, 2016 As I said so no, not really. and even if i did, i still realize it would just be my opinion and nothing more, just the same as anyone elses I don't see what the point you're trying to prove with this example is as far as our argument concerning objectivity.
May 15, 2016 He does have a point, but it's a bit more complicated than what it seems There are objectively bad factors in music The example you posted "55 minutes of fart sounds" doesn't have basic composition, subject, rhythm, message, etc. It's just fart sounds But if we talk about, for example, a proper artist or group, that's a completely different conversation ICP for me might be the worst thing to ever happen to music, but they fill the basic requirements to be considered "art", therefore it's valid to have an argument about it Fast food is objectively bad for health reasons, but how it tastes is completely subjective
May 15, 2016 i meant to point this out as well, and this is one of the reasons why i take this approach with music. we as human beings literally have different taste buds with regards to food, so no one can say across the board that one type of food is objectively better than another, because that will only ever be true to the people with taste buds that allow it to be, not for everyone else with different ones. music is the same thing. we all have a completely different perspective on music due to how are brains process it, and we have different likes and dislikes and things that will turn us on or off of a certain piece. no ones taste is exactly the same, and not even all critics can agree on things when being 'objective'. not to mention if things were objectively 'bad', no one would have genuine reason to like those things, and yet it happens anyways. it's why such a wide array of different kinds of music exist in the first place
May 15, 2016 All of Kanye albums. The guy can't rap, even when good rappers write his s---. Not to mention his god awful auto tune
May 15, 2016 @Pato v2 I see @Cyreides point, but I just think it's a bit of a cop out. We're humans, we can think critically about things such as music. Also at cy, my point with the rock music example is: not liking something doesn't make it bad music. I can't stand country music, to me it's terrible. However, I can acknowledge there are aspects to it that make it good music, like catchiness, writing, etc. But you believe there isn't any objectivity in music so I guess that doesn't apply to you. I just think it's closed minded to call something, as a whole, "bad" just because you don't like it. Edit: I think we're making the same points but just on opposite sides. Probably just some miscommunication.
May 15, 2016 all i'm saying with it is while we can do that, we're only ever as critical of things as we can be from our own subjective opinions of things, which obviously won't line up with everyone else's. i just wish more people realized this instead of attacking everyone else who doesn't agree with their views i do too, and i'm assuming this is directed towards what was said about yeezus in the thread (tho really there's a ton of other examples of people doing this in the thread), and i should've been more clear when i said what i said in my original post that started this, as there was plenty of fuckery in those posts like that and that was slightly overboard in directing that at you probably, i'm not the best at articulating things
