But the whole point of having universal acclaimed albums is to get more people to listen to X record and recognize the influence/quality of that project

What you can do is prefer Encore over MBDFT, but you can't say that it's better because the majority (professional critics, regular music listeners, etc) don't agree with that statement and it ignores its impact in American rap

But I mean going on a forum and telling to someone else "this album is better than that album" doesn't make sense if you believe music is completely subjective... Right?

And I'm pretty sure you all already said one project is better than another and that someone else was dumb for thinking the opposite

So you kinda mean the only objective criteria to judge music is its impact?

you can say it's more influential, but that has nothing to do with the quality. even if more people think ______ album is amazing, it's still just a bunch of peoples opinions, not any sort of objective fact. critics could back an album saying its the best of all time but it's not going to be based on anything more than subjective reasoning still

There are other aspects but that wasn't the point

Yes, even the universal ranking system is subjective, but the whole point is to set a barrier for people to not make foolish comments about X project

    That's what really matters

Obviously art, or even something more concrete like public policy, is never going to approach the levels of objectivity you find in math or physics. I think some people reject music (or film, or literary) criticism because they incorrectly believe that critics are trying--and invariably failing--to reach those levels.*

But that's not what criticism--or for our purposes, forum discussion--is about. Critics are supposed to make arguments about a work based on what's present within the work, or depending on your school of thought, theory, history, and social context. A well-argued review of It Was Written (or A Tale of Two Cities) isn't supposed to be an absolute, scientific truth; the height of criticism is a reading of a work that becomes indisputable.

*Of course, some schools of critics have contributed to this phenomenon. New Criticism, which took hold for much of the 20th century in lit and film, was predicated on the idea that there WAS an absolute truth about the work, which often leads to stodgy, needlessly academic writing. The inverse is taking hold now, where some outlets are publishing "reviews" that amount to barely more than personal essays. Both approaches cause readers to roll their eyes, understandably. But good criticism (or, again, a good forum discussion) is about making compelling arguments about works, not arriving at a magical, knowing answer.

it does if you realize how people operate. not meaning to psychoanalyze people and their musical opinions but generally it comes down to ego and as i said earlier, wanting to feel validated.
yeah, most people probably have. i'm guilty of it, and that's why i generally try not to comment on it all because i realize i slip up and do this on occasion, but i try not to because it serves no purpose other than to s--- on people who do like what i don't, and it's just an excuse to feel better/superior in my tastes.

But if it can't go to the same levels of objectivity, it means it can be kinda objective? For example if you say lil wayne was the best rapper alive in his prime, it's not just your personal opinion, it's also kind of a truth? Or not?
