At concerts, people often get pulled up on stage by the artist. They rap/sing, they dance, they hug, and eventually, they get ushered off the stage. What we usually don’t get to hear about is the impact standing alongside one’s favorite artist may have.
During Kendrick Lamar’s performance at the inaugural Okeechobee Music & Arts Festival, the Compton native noticed a young man named Logan who stood in the front row and sang his heart out along with Kendrick. Half way through his performance of “u,” he stopped and pulled Logan on stage before speaking on suicide and depression. Yesterday, Logan’s brother, Reddit user GetGowenz, recounted the event and shared Logan’s side of the story on r/HipHopHeads.
According to GetGowenz, he and Logan grew up in a good family, but had trouble in school; both were bullied. Logan would often suppress his emotions “because he felt like admitting he was depressed was giving up.” With music being a way for Logan to escape, he attended Okeechobee Festival to see his “favorite musical artist,” Kendrick Lamar.
After standing in the same spot and waiting for Kendrick for over nine hours, Logan finally got to watch the rapper perform “u,” a song that Logan had written a 1000-word essay about for school just two days prior.
When Kendrick pointed out Logan, Logan thought Kendrick was asking for someone else, but eventually made his way up onto the stage, where Kendrick talked about how depression is real and how despite not knowing Logan, people like him are why Kendrick makes music. After eventually leaving the stage, Logan got to watch his idol from the side of the stage perform the rest of his set.
Since the concert, things have changed for the better for Logan. According to GetGowenz, Logan now takes school seriously, is committed to losing weight, and he’s since found a girlfriend, all of which GetGowenz CREDITS to Logan’s short time alongside Kendrick.
“This has 100 percent been for the best of my brother,” says GetGowenz in his Reddit post. “I’m so thankful he got the chance to join his idol on stage.”
If you didn’t already admire Kendrick Lamar, this heartwarming story probably changed that. Watch Logan join his idolon stage at Okeechobee Festival above, and read GetGowenz’s post here.

His post on reddit:
My brother got pulled up on stage by Kendrick Lamar two months ago, it went into a speech about depression and has impacted my brother greatly:
About 2 months ago my brother went to a 4 day music festival. His main goal was to be front row for his favorite musical artist Kendrick Lamar.
A little about my brother. We grew up in a good family.l We had trouble in school. My brother and me were bullied. I was more open with my emotions. He was not. He hid his true emotions because he felt like admitting he was depressed was giving up.
He went to the festival to see Kendrick. It turned crazy. When Kendrick performed the depression ballad 'U' he noticed my brother in the front row singing every word along with him. In the middle of his song he just stopped and demanded he joined him on stage.
2 days prior to this concert my brother had submitted an 1000 word essay for his college english class about this song. It was crazy.
Logan had no clue what to do and thought that he was asking for someone else. A few friends he made at the concert helped push him over the barrier. He got on stage and Kendrick broke into a speech about how depression is real. And how he may not understand what my brother is going through, but that he doesn't have to. He said people like my brother are why he makes songs.
He had the crowd chant my brothers name. Then he allowed my brother to dance with him on stage while 30,000 people watched and cheered him on. He got to watch the rest of the concert from the side of the stage and walk with his IDOL to his car before he left.
I woke up the next morning seeing it all over twitter. I saw videos and all these crazy things. When he got off of the stage and was walking to his campsite he was stopped by over 100 people saying how awesome that was.
My brother can say what he wants but I know the true pain and stuff he's went through.
Since the concert and this everythings changed. He is serious about losing his weight. He found a great girlfriend. He's taking school seriously.
This has 100 percent been for the best of my brother and I'm so thankful he got the chance to join his idol on stage.
