    5. Ready (Remix)

Tied for 5th with the Family and For My People verses. I don't know if this verse will have the longevity to maintain its spot for the rest of the year. The latter two performances showcase thugs distinct vocal range -- something I really wanted to represent with this list. However, I think I cover that with a few other choices so I chose to include one of my favorite guest verses of his instead. This list is actually pretty heavy with guest appearance now that I think about it...he's had a more impressive year in that regard than with his solo work to be honest. The Ready verse is a prime example of how Thug steals the show with ease. His rapping has been more lucid this year, more measured and deliberate. This passage starts out with a declaration that frames Thug as rap games Michael Corleone...every time he tries to leave they pull him back in. He can't even get one of his feet out. But Thug is alright with that. In fact, he wouldn't have it any other way. He embraces the lifestyle, he swears he'll always hit like Stojaković and he's gonna take this s--- as far as it goes. And I'm just happy I get to witness how giddy he gets about his leprechaun-gold Rolex and threesomes like sandwiches.

    4. I Do

Thug's most recent verse. What a show-stopping performance. I understand why something as abrasive as this, what, with all the squeaking and growling and s---, wouldn't appeal to some but coming from a punk/hardcore background I live for the days Thug does more of this s--- (like Cash Talk). It's pure, unadulterated passion. It's an entire life spent caring and providing for your family condensed into a fleeting feature -- and Thug does as much as he humanly can to convey his love and dedication. It's okay if it doesn't click for you...but I'm assuming it struck a similar chord with everyone following this thread. Just brilliant.

    3. Mixtape

While Chance tried his best to emulate a 19 year old Thug, the Goat floated all over this track and proved why he's the best rapper alive. His verse comes out the gate with quotables (bad lil mama she gettin it obama she sting like a bumblebee hot as the sauna) and soon he's being rubbed down by lotion by your girl as he's simultaneously in your perimeter ready to gun you down. Not only is the verse endlessly enjoyable from a writing pov, the vocal performance is breathtaking as his voices cracks, squeaks and croaks its way to the "Just look at me baby, I came from the sewer" climax. One of my favorite verses on one of my favorite albums of the year.

    2. Texas Love (verse 1)

Although the 2nd verse is more straightforward/easier to follow and has those #BARS, the first verse is everything I love about young thug. It's abrasive, it's experimental, it's self-aware. This is a prime example of Thug not letting himself get too comfortable. The style he developed during the rich g--- era is fantastic but it was no near as volatile as the material he made during the ICFN/1017 era and this acts as a 2016 rendition of the same creative risks that paid off in the past. It's crazy how expressive this guy can be using polar opposite styles...in the same d--- verse ("I dont care what y'all sayin n----- just do you, ay" to "I just picked a 40 up on a back end"). I love the slurring, the mumbling, the screeching and the euphoric singing and I can't wait to see how this all plays out on Hitunes...

    Texas Love SOTY btw.
