By now, everyone should know about Baz Luhrmann’s new show The Get Down coming to Netflix this August. The show, which counts Nas as an executive producer, sheds light on the formation of hip-hop in the late ’70s and the environment from which the genre sprouted.

In a fresh new trailer for the show which you can see above, a new song from Nas is featured.

“I came from the city, back in the time / 1977, it was maximum crime / The Bronx, we had to rumble with rivals on the rubble while buildings around us would crumble / But yo my life began last year, sophomore of high school / That summer I saw her, said to myself, ‘She’ll be my wife soon,'” spits Nas in the teaser.

Grandmaster Flash will also contribute to the film as well as Daveed Diggs, who starred in Hamilton: The Musical.

Luhrmann recently said that Nas is a “huge creative force” behind the project. By the looks of these trailer, this show is shaping up to be incredible.

I remember when they were doing casting calls for the show, I tried to get my younger cousin to audition, she didn't want to. This show covers the Bronx in the late 70's which is when my father and uncle were there. She was the right age for the casting and she had an advantage in that both of her parents grew up in the Bronx in the 70s. I'd love to get their opinion on the show. I just started it and so far it looks kind of corny. It feels like a Broadway re-imagining of the Bronx. I was hoping for something a little more gritty but they spent so much money, this thing feels like an overblown caricature of that era. Again I just started it, maybe it will get better. They did try to hit different points like The Writer's Bench at 149th Street, which was a famous meetup spot for the city's graffiti writer's (although Jaden's line in that scene was so cringeworthy). The g--- situation, which from what my father and uncle explained to me was much more prevalent. There were literally gangs on every corner and you had to be very careful on which blocks you walked on. Slumlords burning down buildings for insurance. All of those things did happen.

Giancarlo Esposito is in the show as well as Jimmy Smits (Dexter Season 3), Jaden Smith, Shameik Moore (from the movie Dope).

It does feel very over produced/too polished and the main story comes off a bit corny at times but I'm still enjoying it. The music on this is great.

I think the show is trying to be the spiritual descendant of Wild Style and Beat Street, which both came out in the 80s. Those films had s-----y acting and weak stories but both films came out when Hip Hop still was in it's beginning phase and what made those movies work was that actual artists/B-Boys from that era participated in those films. This show relies on consultants like Grandmaster Flash and Nas (I do like the way the episodes open with Nas rhyming as Ezekiel) but the story is told through these actors. Some of them work, some don't. I like Jimmy Smits character, Ezekiel's alright. Shameik does a good job in his role but that character has too many things going on at once. Part student DJ, graffiti master, drug trafficker, etc. Cadillac and his mother are too over the top. At times it feels like I'm watching Black Dynamite when those two get on screen. The difference is that Black Dynamite is a parody comedy film. It's supposed to be ridiculous and cheesy.

I know Flash got behind this project but I feel that they're not paying enough homage to Kool Herc. So far, I've only heard him mentioned once and he's the guy who most people recognize as the creator or founder of Hip Hop. Not to diminish Flash at all but Herc was before Flash. I'm still going through the season so maybe there will be more attention paid to Herc. Maybe even a portrayal (as long as he was compensated properly, no "Vinyl").
