Uh, the top free agent in the NHL went to one of the best teams in the league this decade.

Lucic was one of the top free agents this offseason, went to the Oilers who had the worst record last year.

*edit* 2nd worst record I guess.

The Celtics traded their whole team for KG and Ray, after getting hosed out of Durant in that 07 lottery.

I don't blame KD, but I do think the league needs to do something about these super teams.

Is anyone here going to be interested in games outside of KD's return to OKC and GS vs CLE? Excluding your hometown teams of course. Like why would I care to watch anyone else unless I'm an NBA nut

At least the sixers will look like more than a high school team this year, but what does it matter unless we grab an established superstar within three years

I don't expect them to win 70+ games next year, maybe not even 65+.

I think they'll be less worried about the regular season and try to be more rested and ready for the playoffs. Plus they'll get team's best shot every night.

Oh well let's be honest in the NBA there's rarely more than 3 teams that have a legit title shot each year anyways.

Can anybody propose a way to fix the parity without reducing cap space?

Get rid of the lottery for starters. Give the worst teams the first picks

You said the biggest free agent in the league, which was Stamkos by a country mile. And hey let's not act like the Oilers are bottom-feeders--their NBA analogue is basically the Wolves, or at least somewhere in that vicinity.

There probably isn't a way to legislate it into effect.

just do what the NHL does and force cap compliancy. keep it at the 93 million it is or whatever, but don't allow teams to go in to the regular season if they spend a dollar more.

it worked for the NHL, i don't know if theres a more competitive league in sports.

If you put a ceiling on the cap, that money is just going to non-athletes. Maybe a proportional limit would work better and violating it has consequences in the draft or something. Ex. You can't give more than x percentage of cap to 2-3 players. You could at least dissuade ring chasing by making stars take a pay cut to do it.

Just another thing I dislike about team sports.

There are already limits in that regard though.

Kinda hard to argue this is a mark against team sports tho--all these sports, all these leagues predate this level of television revenue.

I'll clarify. Not so much pay, as the mechanics of a team and the building that they require. There are terms that will be dogshit for decades. Not to mention regional fandom and what not.

I just watched a nobody light heavyweight (Joe Smith) knockout a real contender in Alex Fonfara and give himself a career. That's a mythos I want to watch.

It's not like any sport is perfect. Boxing is super cruel. Just saying I prefer the dynamic. It feels a lot less contrived.

Eh I'm not going to try to convince you, because this is all personal preference, but I think the cultural ties to teams in certain cities are important.

I'd also point out that teams who finish poorly have the opportunity to draft well and to develop that talent; their front office and scouting departments have the job of finding undervalued pieces elsewhere. Not that any of this will convince you to become a Phillies fan or whatever, but franchises more or less end up where they deserve to based on the talent they have, on and off the field. The only totally uncontrollable variable is injury, but that's in all sports.

what an absolute joke the nba is now. they'll never do it but they should just have 4 teams in each conference make the playoffs at this point. it's mind boggling to me that 16 teams make it, every round is a 7 game series, and only 4 teams have a shot to win it each year. also durant is so mentally soft for this one lol
