But it does make sense. A rogue gunman with no formal ties to any organization doesn't represent people beyond him; police officers very plainly represent the police department. (It's also not a "handful"; there are going to be over a thousand people killed by police again this year.)

They represent the department, sure. But they are also humans with an own (in those cases racist) minds. Of course there are a lot, but to say that they represent 'all cops'?

You're splitting hairs/playing semantics now. Police officers are extensions of their departments; their authority is derived from their connection with that department. So no, treating each police officer who murders someone as "an individual" and not as a representative of a larger system is naive and actually doesn't even hold its water in legal terms.

Thats not really fair to the non-profiling police who risk their lives every day enforcing the law

I don't care about being "fair" to them though. That's what they're supposed to do, that's the job. Most police departments in America have long histories of systemic & systematic racism, and they've chosen to become extensions of that. I don't advocate for any violence against them, but I can't get behind the notion that the cops who aren't racist and/or trigger-happy get to represent the institution in a way others don't/

couldn't the same be said about the "bad apples" in the BLM crowd? What differentiates them that they aren't considered an extension of their cause?

He apparently has ties to a "Black Power Group" who are intent on killing more cops.

Yes, police k--- a lot of people. A lot of them pose a threat, some don't, but wrongfully meet an unfortunate end. That number is much smaller and doesn't represent every cop. I think you're making the connection because it supports what you want to believe. Not to say you don't have a right to think the way you do or an unsubstantiated desire to improve the powers that be, but categorizing the people who protect our communities as collective murderers and racists is wrong.

If I went and got a job as a cop tomorrow, I automatically turn into a racist who suppresses the rights or black people?

    @Michael Myers ahem

The police are more reflective as a group when something negative happens, not just because they're supposed to uphold the law, but they're rarely prosecuted, let alone punished when they break it.

    Two things:

    1. Which "bad apples in the BLM crowd"? No one claiming ties to Black Lives Matter has executed white people on camera.
    2. Black Lives Matter is not a government institution that is publicly funded and given legal authority to use deadly force. We have a right, as tax-paying citizens, to demand more of police officers than of ordinary individuals.
Wrong how? Morally unsound, or inaccurate? Because you'd have a hard time convincing me of either. The city you and I both live in has one of the most grotesquely unfit police departments in the history of the modern world.

This same concept applies to the military. A member here thinks I committed war crimes because I'm in the air force. I guess I represent all the bs the military does too.

All of the above. You're categorizing people the same way others do for BLM and other civil rights movements. No one is saying that our local police don't have a history of serious issues, but I don't see them as a group of racists because they just aren't despite what a minority of the force may be.

what? ofc you treat them as individual and they should get tried and thats should become a norm

so should we treat all teachers as child molesters cuz one of them did it?

I mean, his numbers are inaccurate, but definitely not "much smaller"

    https://www.washingtonpost.com/graphics/national/police-shootings-2016/

    509 and counting
This is something where I find myself confused

We call it "systematic racism" because some members of the law enforcement abuse their power to target racial minorities, not because the system itself is racist, if anything elitist...

Sweeping generalizations with no reliable proof contribute nothing to the conversation

Its completely different and treating them as individuals does not hold up legally.

thats what i am saying, they should be treated as individuals cuz of we do a poll right now, i am sure 80% of cops are not racist at the very least...treating an entire police department as racist is idiotic

These shootings have happened more than enough times where it can't be simply looked at individually.

LMAO @ not believing many police departments are and long have been racist. Lmao.
But Blair the institution itself is and always has been deeply racist. I can't quite wrap my head around not believing that?
