All music was better in '90s.
I just heard Third Eye Blind's "semi charmed life" today... and remembered that it was considered a fluffy pop single in '97. The song rocks hard and is about a complicated exciting destructive relationship filled with hard drugs and sex.
In the 90's people were smarter and experienced life more... we had better taste and demanded way better, more complicated and more meaningful music.
Most of you millennials are stupid, lazy and idled by video games and s-----y television and social networking. Your music is terrible.OWD, Heisenberg, Ghostface and 4 others like this. -

Ranking those first four albums is nearly impossible. Aquemini is the masterpiece, probably in my top three albums of all time; beyond that, I think you could argue for any of the other three at #2. The plurality of people would have ATLiens there, and I get that, but I think the debut gets unfairly slighted because it wasn't as experimental. My personal favorite outside of Aquemini--maybe even including it--is Stankonia, though I'd concede that's the most uneven. If I had to rank them:
Aquemini
ATLiens
Southernplayalistic
Stankonia
Speakerboxxx
(Sir Lucious Left Foot)
The Love Below
Idlewild

Whoever is saying 2010's is the best...who is better than Biggie, Nas, Tupac, Raekwon, Ghostface, Rakim, Snoop (doggystyle), Ice Cube, Redman, Outkast, Wu-Tang, Jay-Z, A Tribe Called Quest, Big Pun... probably missing a lot off the top of my head but intrigued -

I mean, this is a dead-end question and always has been. The '90s had a higher density of classic albums, esp. on major labels; the mid-2000s (basically 2004-09) were kind of a singles-oriented time in a way that didn't play well with old heads, ironically. So probably the '90s. The real question is how you'd rank the 80s, 90s, 00s, and 10s. -

90's, not only because of the quality of music, but the overall atmosphere.
I mean, I'm sure 2010 is fun for a lot of fans, because of how accessible music is to you, but to me, it was much better during the 90's, when you had to wait for everything.
We didn't have social media, youtube, or albums at our finger tips. You had to go out and buy the tape/CD. You had to look in the booklets, find what albums were dropping on that label, and wait until they did.
Having a bad album, meant it was a huge deal, just as if it was a classic.
Like you'd only have a certain amount of money to spend on tapes/cd's, so you had to make it count lol. You couldn't just download 10 albums a week and pick and choose favorite songs.
If you bought tapes, you HAD to listen to the entire tape. You couldn't even skip tracks.
Music videos were a big deal. And you really only could watch them when the shows came on BET/MTV that showed them. You couldn't go on YouTube.
I mean, when you guys hear about a great battle, you can search on YouTube, and boom, you can watch it, replay it, dissect it, etc.
I STILL have not seen the DMX vs Jay Z battle, which was like a legend.
Artists didn't have a bunch of interviews that you could watch at any time, or social media outlets to pour their hearts into. We literally just knew these guys from a few interviews we saw, and what was said on their music.
It felt iconic to watch Biggie, Jay, DMX, 2Pac, Nas, Wu Tang, Outkast, Eminem etc.
You'd talk between your friends about a certain artist making an appearance on MTV, BET, late night, or on the radio.
Now, that s--- isn't a big deal. Back then? It was a huge deal. You'd have to wait for the show, from whatever outlet, and you actually cared about the questions and answers.
I mean, I'm happy for the 2010's, it must be awesome to have your favorite artist release 2-4 projects in a year, and for them to be SO accessible...
I'm not trying to discredit the 2000's and 2010's, but the era was totally different.
It's like Jay Z said on Volume 3... About opening up a tape or a CD. "Yeah, I know you just ripped the packaging off your CD... If you like me you readin the credits right now"
It's hard to explain to the younger generation. It was just such a fun time to be a hip hop fan. I'm sure you guys love that things are so accessible, which is cool.
When Napster first surfaced, I thought it was the most amazing thing ever. I definitely loved downloading albums instead of buying them, and I continue to do that.
However, looking back, I think that's why I loved the 90's so much. Everything seemed so much bigger, more iconic. You were more in awe of rap. At least I was.Last edited: Jul 12, 2016OWD, Soldier, boyz n the suburbs and 2 others like this. -

I think it's so hard to compare the decades because the music made has been so different in each of them.
It's like comparing the early-00s Pop Punk music to Pyschadelic Rock from them late-60s. It's easy to do by preference, but when you start trying to go into detail it gets very hard to compare.
I agree that the volume of classics from the 90s far surpasses that of the 00s, but there are a lot of classics from the 00s that are better than the majority of those from the 90s.Dread or Alive, Skippy, Soldier and 1 other person like this. -

90's. 2000's was the beginning for bs rappers getting put on. Not saying that the 90's didn't have any, but they didn't have as many. No Limit and Cash Money effect was in full swing in the 2000's and you started seeing some really s-----y artists pop out of all regions. 2000's still had a lot of great artists and albums but there was less fat in the 90's.
I experienced both eras. I was a kid going into my teens in the 90s and I was a teen going into my twenties in the 2000's. The 90's were better.OWD, lil uzi vert stan and Worm like this. -
