Whew, haven't been on here in a minute but;I must ask,are black people actually going backwards? It feels like we aren't as United as we should be in these times. I know we live in a country of diversity and different cultures,so people have different opinions, but still.

The reason I say digress is cause, you can look back at the 90's,early 2000's etc and you will see that black people were more together as a culture. From music, fashion, businesses we had our own thing going on. Fast forward to now, there really isn't any black culture, you have a good number of black people separating themselves from other blacks cause of skin tone(you know, the type that loves to say"I'm not black,I'm mixed with...)and wealthy black people just excusing themselves from the culture altogether (ex.Stacey Dash,Kevin Gates,ASAP Rocky and even Ye to a sorta lesser extent).

Not to mention how black men are getting shot by cops and there are always one or two black people on the news trying to defend said cop,no matter the situation. I truly believe the US and its society is moving forward (unless Trump wins) but as of now, black people are moving backwards in my honest opinion.

blacks never had a culture of their own in America

also the separation between blacks is based on socioeconomic status more than skin

lmao I mean a SHARED culture ...just like you pointed out in OP....

"Fast forward to now, there really isn't any black culture, you have a good number of black people separating themselves from other blacks cause of skin tone(you know, the type that loves to say"I'm not black,I'm mixed with...)and wealthy black people just excusing themselves from the culture altogether (ex.Stacey Dash,Kevin Gates,ASAP Rocky and even aye to a sorta lesser extent)."

I guess you kind of have a point .....the closest we had was during the civil rights era (wearing afros, lingo, music, dress, etc)

Yep,the thing what made the 70's so special was that black people were pretty much trying to figure s--- out together after all the racism in the past and such.

What made the 90's special was basically Rap culture and black people trying to rep for black culture at all times. None of that goes on now.

but when you say digressing do you mean "assimilation" ....I kind of take digression as talking about progression of consciousness or knowledge? I see American culture as a whole kind of diverging into one thing

@gnarlynasty do you think the African American culture we're referring to has become a commodity in 2016?
