That's true, but I don't like that beat. Not because it's simple, I just don't like it, it doesn't have anything to keep me interested over a minute and a half.

I think you misunderstood. Track can be hard and mixed lightly/softly at the same time. Folding Clothes is energetic but is still mixed lightly. None of the elements on that track are bothering your ears when played on highest volume. It's not as loud as it could be, but it's balanced so you can hear 80% of the song elements when played on 100% volume. I'll explain the difference visually to you.

This is the wave file of Foldin Clothes:

You can see that the peaks which are kicks and snares are dominating the mix. The vocals and instruments are the mid, most occupied part. None of the sounds are distorted or whatsoever. It's clean.

This is a wave file of Sneakin - Drake feat. 21 Savage - a b-----r as you call it:

Here you can see that every sound is distorted to give you that loud feel, there is no breathing room for anything in the song, it's just loud loud loud every second, which serves purpose but this is not a good mix, and if Cole did this with Immortal s--- would sound way off and out of place. You get it?

People nowadays are used to the way Sneakin is mixed and mastered because the standard in 2016 is that everything has too be loud first, and to get loud, you have to sacrifice something. Mez did a pretty good job on this album, it's not perfect, but it's his best mixed project so far.

Immortal, ville mentality, she's mine both parts, and 4yeo are integral to the story. Change is a 10/10 track. So 6/10 tracks that fit and practically have to be there. The other 4: neighbors, immortal, deja vu, and foldin clothes are like 7/10 or 8/10. Those tracks had to be home runs imo in order for this s--- to be a classic based on the tracks that had to be there.

yes, ok ye i understand ... i appreciate that, like someone else said its cool to have you on here with actual knowledge on these things to educate us lol ...

but then my question is could the drums not be changed at all to just hit harder but still with the same type of mix ?

so you don't make everything louder but rather just have the drums knock more in contrast with the other sounds ?

For example on TPAB. Album is quite slow and dense. But the tracks meant to hit hard, alright, king kunta and TBTB, hit HARD. They hep change the pace of the album completely.

    true, especially alright

and then don't forget hood politics as well, which hits like crazy (i actually really like TPAB btw lol)

very similar to views also where theres a b-----r like every few songs (although in that case i actually find it was too much back and forth where the bangers came out of nowhere at times)

and thats the thing is theres only 10 songs on this so cole really just needed like one more of those strategically placed somewhere in the middle

You can do it by compressing sounds. Compressing is a tehnique and difference between a great and a good engineer. Immortal can be mixed better, that's for sure, but that Cardiak version is poorly mixed, matter of fact, I don't think it's mixed at all. It's prolly just the beat he pull off his computer with leveled sounds.

I think what makes Neighbors so good to me is Cole'a flow, matched with the beat. Elite's story also provides a great visual for me.

Yeah, I feel you, although I love Neighbors and Immortal. It's really hard to make a perfect album because music is so subjective. There isn't an album that exist that I like absolutely everything about it (whether it's a hook, part of beat, verse, part of verse or whatever), there is always going to be something that doesn't appeal as much as the other stuff even if it's a little thing, atleast to me anyway.

Yeah I don't think it should be like the cardiac level in general, I just felt the drums could use a little boost but I feel what you're saying. We also have to take into account they're mixing in the context of an album so I get what you're saying completely. 808s weren't banging hard enough imo though and I'm sure they could have brought that up for sure.

Even if they brought up that 808 in the beat it prolly wouldn't b--- as I think you want it to b---. Cause that 808 sound used is not the one to send shivers through your body, it's the more type of sound used a replacement to a bass sound, to give you 2016 feel but still don't be overpowering. For instance, when the beat changes that live bass sounds way more punchier and full. Everything has been done on purpose, to Cole's preference :idk:

@Bliss off topic and I know it depends on the individual song, but how much compression do you usually use when mastering?

Not much, I don't really master my beats, I mix them only. I usually use pre-mixed sounds and then adjust if needed. I could do better, but I really don't have time to master and go in detail cause a normal ear can't really tell it's a bigger difference. Plus it's a beat, not a song, the feeling of the beat matters the most. As long as it sounds good, it's enough.

    Dreamville had a solid year.

    Cozz's project was OK.

We didn't get a new verse from Omen.

    Bas' album was dope.

Ari's EP was cool and Cole closed out the year.
