i just jumped onto YT and found a couple tutorial videos and a compilation of synthwave, and skimmed through just to get a feel for how stuff is structured, and the types of sounds/instruments used
like these for example
googled good tempos for synthwave (115-130), and good keys for synthwave songs to be in, tho that was less helpful
after that, it was just coming up with a bass that sounded retro enough, and i layered a couple diff ones to do it (two of which were actually the same one in the Harmless vst, just at different octaves and playing different notes.... on the topic of the bass too, short, quick notes/jabs or w.e is best, avoid having a bunch of long notes, that kills the bouncy feel/rhythm of the track
put reverb on a lot of s---, and spreading the panning of stuff around to fill all the space
for drums, it's pretty simple s---, basic kick, step, step, snare/kick pattern throughout, so the bass is driving the rhythm mostly, or other synths. lot of repetitive/building elements. used an open hi hat towards the end of the drum patterns, and sparingly used some hi hats in the rest.
synths in general for synthwave are easy af. just literally find some cheap old sounding ones, which are fairly easy to find in vsts like nexus. especially retro sounding are the vast majority of any brass synth. and if somethings not quite got that sound, mess around with throwing a flanger on them, or chorus, or ensemble
also added some random sliding effects to some of the synths, barely noticeable but there
add more reverb
drums, i picked from dubstep/house/other electronic sample packs for the hits. tried to pick the punchiest, yet duller sounding ones i could. and all the mixing/eqing is along the same lines, crisp enough to hear everything and to tell it's mixed well, but not overly sharp since it should sound retro/80s or w.e
then grabbed analogue noise from Freesounds.org and loops it throughout, added some random slow down effects towards the beginning of the song. some 3xosc rises/downlifters here and there
add some light side-chaining to stuff like the bass and maybe some other prominent synths
REVERB
prolly a looooooot more that can be done than what i did, like old samples n s--- added, but this the basic isht i feel

This sounds like it could be big in the 80s while also sounding modern...
