The film holds a very special place in my heart because it came to me at the end of a long period of depression that mirrored the main character's and I feel that it is the most honest and nuanced depiction of that mindstate ever put to film. Lonergan is a master of crafting living human beings on screen and this is by far his biggest accomplishment, taking the formal brilliance of his first feature and the ambitious nature of Margaret and striking a perfect balance between the two.
Casey's performance is massive because he isn't interested in showing off his acting chops and simply becomes the character, it gives off an honest vibe that is so rare in cinema to me, the only other actor that comes to mind in that regard is Joaquin Phoenix. The same goes for all of the actors in the film, especially Michelle Williams, who has been among my favorite actresses oat for a long time now. The film is just so modest and subtle and never tries to be anything more than that, it captures the essence of all the best American cinema to me.
So basically, I don't expect anyone to agree with me, nor do I care if they do; the film just really speaks to me and I hold it in very high regard. I think it'll stand the test of time much more than the majority of American films that have been released this year or any of the year for that matter. It's a big vibe.Radeem, Mikey, BobbyDigital and 4 others like this. -

To me, Moonlight is easily one of the best Best Picture winners, which may sound hyperbolic until one actually looks at the list and realizes that most winners are just "meh" and that perhaps only around a quarter of them are great. After last night's results and a few rewatches, I updated my ranking of all of the Best Picture winners.
