ok,
B4DA$$ had a late 80s/early 90s NY oriented sound
crispy and cohesive, but with an underground touch, lazy flow, technical yet minimalist lyrics
the kind of album you play in the background, at after partie or in the early morning car drive
He blew up, lost a close friend, made tv show apparences, and the country changed a lot
So Joey had other ambitions for this one
he grew artistically, matured his sound, and tried to propose something more friendly and accessible to masses but with the same -struggle message- as we could have heard on Devastated and with the very political Land Of The Free
I'm not liking dude's interviews, but I sure love his music a lot
Just a quick first listen, first impressions "review"
Intro : the sound IS in fact very different
very refreshing, short, simple but sets the tone to a more lively, soulfoul sound
For My People : beat is smooth and jazzy
a very positive song, easy listening
Temptation : this one I knew. performed live many times.
this is a ballad. a smooth reminiscence of early 2000s RnB record, with a west coast touch
Rapping is better than expected, he was only singing during the live performances
He's kinda agressive, very emotional, his voice has a particular tone that makes it more alive than his previous efforts. this is very catch, this could make a killing on the radio, perfect summer song
Land Of The Free : ya all know this s--- already.
I like it, a lot of quotables, but musically I'm not blown away. Strong message though
Devastated : oldest track on this s---, served as the first single,
and a warning that he was changing his sound. this is pure radio catchy s---, this has replay value
for what it is.
Y dont u love me : this is could have been a leftover from B4DA$$ actually, I"m surprised it found its way here. political theme though, but music wise it def sounds like his previous works
Rockabye Baby : THIS IS a stand out track. this is a total b-----r. hardest s--- i've heard in a while. beat, flow, lyrics everthing scream "play me on repeat'. I'd be very impressed
GIVE ME SOME MORE JESUS CHRIST. I ain't hear anything so banging since... oh well, Q's last album !!!!!
this is unfuckwithable
Ring The Alarm : wow... this psychedelic intro.. d--- beat drops. this is f---ing hot. this is late 90s hip hop. rapping is straight fire from everybody on it. So much energy on this, can't stop moving my head. f---in dope. Rockabye Baby type track.
Though at this point I'm kinda worried... the album doesn't sound organic at all....
I used to love this guys cohesiveness..
The album started soulful and jazzy
now this is f---ing agressive content
Don't get me wrong, last two tracks are dope.. but between Devastated, Land of The Free, and Rockabyebaby...
Super Predator with Styles P : again the jazzy soulful sound. smooth as f---. the sequencing though..... this album is a roller coster .
P killing this s---. those type beats are custom made for him. he stole the show.
Babylon : this has a "kendrick interlude" type of tone. in fact it reminds me of kendrick "interlude tracks" on TPAB
song goes in every direction. jazzy, with jamaican singing... not a perfect match, but it'll grow on me.
Legendary W/ Cole :
okay. let's see what's this about. okay this is a Born Sinner leftover? it sounds like it. fits the jazzy side of this album. Cole is on sleep mode on this. no emotion at all. it's a depressing track.
Amerikkkan Idol : Okay last track on this.. d--- IT WAS FAST, how long/short is this album??
50 minutes??? can't be. seemed very short. Ive skipped/skimmed through Devastated and Land of The Free and Rockabyebaby though.
It really reconnects with his early sound, and lyrics. I like it a lot of course. the album concluded with his natural sounds. flow on point, straight spitting, slow pitch instrumental
this track is dope, but it convinces me, that he tried to crossover to much on this one, and in the end, he sounds better when he's not reinventing himself.
but evolves into gun shot drums, flow stays the same. dope. message is there. basically it explains the whole concept of the album.this is a very negative picture of america.
On first listen.. I'd say that what he gained in overall concept and message he lost in cohesiveness
B4DA$$ had a very distinct sound all the way throught, but the recurrent theme was only the rise to fame with no deepness
this is very politically, socially oriented. but the sound is so variant from one track to another.
it sounds like a lot of tracks on this will have to grow on me...
best tracks are the bangers and the ones with his old sound, for now.
it DEFINITELY deserves a few more listens all the way through
replays : Temptation, Amerikkkan Idol, Ring The Alarm, Rockabye Baby, for my peopleLast edited: Apr 1, 2017xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx, marmin shkreli, Ordinary Joel and 6 others like this. -

You could've just edited this into the OP and saved your time lol.
Should we have a separate discussion thread? No specific thoughts on the album yet. Joey is definitely a lot more musical now. He's matured in content as well. Not as much spiritual stuff, a lot more sociopolitical and black empowerment stuff. Production all over this is dope. Hooks are sometimes kinda rappity rappy lyric-wise, but they're catchy. Reminds me a lot of Mos and Talib on this. Those were my first impressions.ThatsthenewYe, Sav Stanfield, Bojack and 1 other person like this. -
