Even the best of the best lost games though.... the 90's bulls were taken to game 6's. This warriors team has legit not lost a game in the post season yet. Not even close to losing a game. The level of quality between the warriors and cavs is pretty evident; like it's noticeable and that's a problem. Not to mention the difference in quality between the top 3 teams (warriors, cavs, spurs) & the rest of the league which is tremendous. This is the most uncompetitive the league has been in our life time. I 100% blame the league for this because they continue to raise the salary cap encouraging these super teams to form. It's total bs.

The old dynasties were built mostly through drafts, one free agent, etc. the celtics started this new trend and GS took it to a new level of lame

The Bulls also had historic runs, the Lakers with Shaq and Kobe finished a postseason with 1 loss, then swept the Finals the year after.

The Cavs got stomped out but let's not make too much out of 1 game either. They have 3 all stars and a solid supporting cast. They were blown out in games 1 & 2 by 24 in 2016 so they're far from done, especially with Bron in uniform.

I don't have numbers to support it but the league isn't the most watered down it's been, there's always been trash bottom feeders, a couple title contenders, and middling teams.

The only teams to win the Finals since 1984 (33 years) are the Celtics, Lakers, Pistons, Bulls, Rockets, Spurs, Mavericks, Heat, Dubs, and the Cavs. That's it.

GS was built almost exclusively through the draft, they signed Iggy, Livingston, and KD. They drafted Curry 7th, Klay 11th, and Draymond in the 2nd.

I get that ppl hate to see another team besides their own be dominant, but wouldn't you do the same thing? The only reason this was possible is because of the contract Curry signed when he was having ankle issues. He's making 11 million a year and suddenly turned into an MVP. I really don't see any issue at all with the way this team was built.

I understand the league has always had dominant teams but nothing to this extent, at least not in our generation. Im a lakers fan, those early 00's teams were great. We had Shaq -- the most dominant basketball player I've ever seen -- and of course Kobe who was great in his own right. Even with how great those teams were, only one of those teams had a 60+ win regular season (2000). The Warriors have had 60+ win regular seasons for the past three years. Lakers had two great players leading the way, this Warriors team has four great players. It's just another level of dominance.

That's how the league goes though, you try to build and sustain a superteam. From that 00 3 peat to the Spurs, Celtics big 4, Miami, Lakers 2peat, the Warriors are just the newest evolution of that.

Again this is really only possible because of how lucky GS got by signing Curry to 11 million a year. He & KD prolly take slightly less than the max to keep this this team intact through their primes.

I totally understand that and I'm not bashing the warriors for what they've done. They did what any franchise would do. I'm bashing the NBA for letting it get this far. Continuing to raise the salary cap thus encouraging these super teams. There needs to be more pressure on teams and players if they want to assemble teams like this. You want to form a super team with several other star players? Be prepared to take substantially less than what you're worth not just "slightly less than a max." #makebasketballcompetitiveagain

Not like they could've blocked it or really done anything about it. The super max that came with the new CBA should help convince some guys to stick with their teams, but winning raises all of their brands so if they have to take a small salary cut it's worth it. Spurs did it for almost 2 decades.

This is such a unique situation though, the only way you could replicate it is kinda what OKC did in drafting KD/Russ/Ibaka/Harden consecutively. Hypothetically they could have signed another star while those guys were on their rookie deals and re-up everyone into luxury tax oblivion like the Cavs do and GS will soon have to.

Exactly... the new CBA should convince some guys to stick with their teams but it's not due to the fact that the salary cap is continuing to rise. The New Yorker published a great piece on this and it explains the issue better than I can:

In just about every industry in America, workers in the middle of the income pyramid have struggled during the past few decades, while those at the top have taken home an increasing share of the rewards. There is, though, one business in which workers in the middle are positively thriving: professional basketball. The N.B.A.’s free-agent signing period started last week, and in the days since, alongside the expected megadeals for stars, an extraordinary number of lucrative contracts have been handed out to average players.

The backup guard Matthew Dellavedova, for instance, agreed to a four-year, thirty-eight-million-dollar deal with the Milwaukee Bucks, after making just over a million dollars last year, while his former bench mate with the Cleveland Cavaliers, center Timofey Mozgov, signed a four-year, sixty-four-million-dollar deal with the Los Angeles Lakers, for an average salary that will be more than three times what he made last year. The Atlanta Hawks shooting guard Kent Bazemore, who accounted for a middling eleven points and five rebounds a game last year, will make an average of seventeen and a half million dollars a year over the next four years, which is a seven-hundred-and-seventy-five-per-cent raise. And the point guard Mike Conley, of the Memphis Grizzlies, who probably isn’t even among the N.B.A.’s top five at his position, became the league’s best-paid player when he re-signed for more than thirty million dollars a year.

The reason for the frenzy is simply that there’s much more money to go around. The N.B.A.’s new TV deal will bring in twenty-four billion dollars over the next eight years, and players are guaranteed about half of the league’s revenue, which means that the per-team salary cap (and the salary floor, the minimum amount teams must spend on players) is rising sharply.

If the N.B.A. operated like most industries, teams would likely spend much more of that money on outsized contracts for superstars and high-profile rookies. LeBron James’s economic value to the Cavaliers is immense—far greater than Conley’s value to the Grizzlies. Similarly, there’s little doubt that the Philadelphia 76ers’ rookie Ben Simmons, who went first overall in this year’s N.B.A. draft, will be much better—and will draw more fan interest—than Timofey Mozgov. In anything resembling a free market, James would earn vastly more than Conley, and Simmons more than Mozgov.

Salaries in U.S. pro-sports leagues, though, are determined by rules set out in the collective-bargaining agreements that the owners reach with players’ unions. The N.B.A.’s current C.B.A. was designed to benefit pretty good veterans, while suppressing the salaries of incoming players and superstars. Teams are forbidden, for instance, from paying any player more than thirty-five per cent of the salary cap, while rookie salaries are even more tightly restricted—even Simmons can’t make more than ten million dollars, total, over the course of the next two years. (The obvious explanation for this is that prospects have no influence within the N.B.A.’s players’ association, since they’re not yet in the league, and there are fewer superstars than pretty-good players.)

It isn’t necessarily terrible that superstars tend to be significantly underpaid while less-gifted players are often significantly overpaid. On principle, most people believe that companies should do a better job of evening out salaries between top earners and everyone else. But this past week has also shown that the N.B.A.’s salary structure has had an odd effect, which may conflict with that notion of balance: it appears to be making it easier for successful teams to stay successful. In other words, the talent-rich are getting richer.

That might seem counterintuitive, since supporters of salary caps often argue that they encourage parity, by deëmphasizing the size of a team’s market. But having a relatively low maximum salary diminishes the importance of money in the best players’ free-agency decisions, since nearly every team will be able and willing to spend the max to get a superstar. This factored into the free agency of Kevin Durant, who left the Oklahoma City Thunder to sign with Golden State, in part because playing for the Warriors, who just set a record for wins in a season, gives him an excellent chance to win a title. (The C.B.A. does include a few rules that make it easier for a player’s current team to keep him, such as the ability to sign a player for an extra year—but the fact that the salary cap is expected to keep rising has dampened the effectiveness of those rules, since superstars have less of an incentive to sign long-term deals.) Obviously, money was never the sole factor that a superstar free agent would consider, but absent a salary cap and a per-player maximum, a struggling team could extend him a huge offer in an attempt to build a contender overnight. As it is, that’s not an option, which means that, even as N.B.A. teams will collectively spend billions of dollars on contracts next season, few will be able to buy their way to success.
