This album is really just Eminem stepping back to look at what the wild success of his first two albums created. But don’t confuse stepping back with holding back, as his rhymes on this album are as potent as ever. For the first time the public was made aware that Eminem realized the effect his music had on everyone, which he goes in to greater detail on in White America, Without Me, and Sing for the Moment. This certainly displayed his growth into a more mature artist, as he even included a love song to his daughter on it. But don’t get it twisted, there is still plenty anger and lyrical wit leftover from his first two albums, best exemplified on Soldier, ‘Till I Collapse, and Superman.

While it isn’t as consistent as his first two offerings in production, as he went for a rock theme on the album, it does show a departure from his dependency on Dr. Dre beats, as much of it is self-produced. Add this all together, and you may not get his best work, but it is definitely his most complete.

This album started up where The Marshall Mathers LP left off sales wise, as it sold over a million in its first official week and went diamond. It also got the best reviews from critics among his work, as it featured more mature themes and less reliance on shock value.

Em explained the album’s name to Launch:

I was watching some interviews that I had did back last year, and I was talking about how my life is kind of like The Jerry Springer Show and my life is like a show and this and that. And I just hit me like, “Huh, why not? The Eminem Show!”

Like his other albums, The Eminem Show is listed as number 317 on Rolling Stone’s 500 greatest albums of all time.

• In addition, it also landed at number 84 on the decades best albums voted by Rolling Stone
The majority of the album was produced by Eminem himself.
On Hailie’s Song, both on the censored and explicit version, the line God, I’m a Daddy, So Glad that her mom didn’t want her, was scratched out because the line sounded too similar to abort her.

Many clean versions cut the song Drips for obvious reasons as censoring the song would be pointless as the entire song is sexually charged. However, on some clean versions, Drips makes an appearance though some profanities are still present.

Unlike the Marshall Mathers LP, The Eminem Show didn’t spark major controvesy over misogynist and homophobic lyrics.

The Eminem Show began production around the same time Eminem was shooting 8 Mile.

The influence of the album was 1970 rock and roll. He is stated as saying, “Trying to get the best of both worlds.”

Superman, the third single of the album was influenced by his relationship with singer Mariah Carey. This was the last we heard about Mariah in Eminem’s music.


The album was scheduled to release on June 4, 2002. However, the album leaked online and people were seeing the pirated versions on the streets. To combat against piracy, Interscope Records pushed the schedule forward to May 28. However, some stores began selling days before the intended release date resulting in one day of official sales for the chart week.

• In addition, the album was unavailable in Wal*Mart at the time. Despite the mess, the album debuted to number 1 on the Billboard 200 with over 284,000 copies sold.
