I know it's easy to be desensitized to these stories. It doesn't matter if you've witnessed endemic, racist, virtually unchecked police violence for years, or whether you were rattled awake two summers ago by St. Louis. But it's important that we continue to acknowledge the victims and continue to push for change.
About 24 hours ago, a man names Alton Sterling was murdered by two Baton Rouge police officers. Sterling was 37, and had an 11-year-old son; minutes before he was murdered, he was selling CDs outside of a convenience store, where he was known and welcome.
Police responded to an anonymous call about an altercation in the parking lot of that convenience store. In video footage filmed by a bystander, there are no people visible aside from Sterling and two officers. (Police claim the officers' body cameras fell off.)
In the video, Sterling is wrestled to the ground, then pinned by two police officers, one by his neck and one over his chest. The officer near his neck pins Sterling's left arm to the ground. (Sterling remains here for some time, the actions are not instantaneous.) Each officer draws his weapon, one pointing his gun at Sterling's head, the other at his chest. At some point, one of the officers yells "Gun!" One or both of the officers fire shots into Sterling. He dies instantly.
An autopsy has confirmed that four to six bullets to the chest caused Sterling's death.
As his body lay on the concrete, one of the officers retrieved a gun from Sterling's pocket. In Louisiana, it is legal to openly carry a firearm without so much as a license. The owner of the convenience store was "two feet" away from the altercation and insists Sterling's hand was nowhere near the gun; from the video, it appears unlikely his arm could have reached his pocket or waistline even if he had tried to do so.
The store owner says one of the officers said "Just leave him" in reference to Sterling's body.
Here's a good article, with link to the video in question, from The Advocate, an important Louisiana news outlet: http://theadvocate.com/news/1631198...tal-shooting-of-suspect-on-north-foster-driveMike Tyson, ANOZ, ALEx80 and 9 others like this.(This ad goes away when signing up) -

In case anyone thought this s--- was over:
A 32-year-old man name Philando Castile was just killed in Falcon Heights, which is basically an area on the east side of Minneapolis (my hometown). He was driving with his girlfriend in the passenger seat and his girlfriend's daughter in the back when he was pulled over for having a broken taillight.
By the time his girlfriend started live streaming (through that FB function, not sure how it works but it's already got like 1.5 mil plays), Castile was bleeding out. The girlfriend was calm and measured and explained what happened: the officer asked Castile for his license and registration; Castile informed the officer that he is licensed to carry a firearm and had a pistol on his waistline; when he reached for his wallet and the gun became visible, the officer shot him three to six times in the arm and chest. It's reported that he was declared dead at the hospital.
During the live stream, Castile's girlfriend explains what I just did in greater detail and in a slow, calm, but clear and deliberate voice. The officer who fired the shots does not dispute any of the account; instead he's still waving his gun in the face of the dying man, shrieking hysterically. (Later in the stream, when the girlfriend is being cuffed and arrested for being in the passenger seat when her boyfriend was murdered, the officer can be heard screaming "f---ing n----.")
The video captures what is more than likely Castile's death, plus her arrest by at least three police officers (none moves to the car to attempt basic first aid) and the voice of her daughter, who tries to comfort her. It's readily available online. If you still think the police are simply using force when necessary and aren't some jumpy trigger-happy sacks of s--- in way over their heads, watch it. -

If you get so scared and nervous that you pump five shots into a guy who is on the ground, not holding a weapon with one arm completely neutralized, WITH ANOTHER COP NEARBY, you shouldn't be a police officer. -

btw - if i ever get arrested by some cops in that manner and I am legally carrying a gun- One of the first things Im going to do is tell the cops I have a f---ing gun to avoid any problemsan0nymous, TheConstant, marmin shkreli and 7 others like this. -

See? Even people who think the Michael Brown case wasn't clear-cut enough agree this was an out-and-out execution.
I'm not trying to start a huge back-and-forth with you about a 23-month-old case with you Kon, but suffice to say you and I are worlds apart on that one. And even we can agree that there is no ambiguity here.Enigma, marmin shkreli, K18 El Duderino and 5 others like this. -

Well, that's a dangerous precedent to set too, every case should be treated individually, all we known so far is he was killed for no reason.Skippy, Ordinary Joel, asvdawg and 3 others like this. -

Saw this, to me it was even worse than most of these other incidents. In the Mike Brown case for example he tried to attack the cop and take his gun. In this case, Alton Sterling was already contained on the ground with 2 officers there. There was zero reason to even s---t him once in the leg or something, much less enough times in the chest to k--- him.
This was flat out murder. -

Two thoughts. It's kind of sick we are watching these videos. I don't deny their importance but a part of me thinks they're being viewed less with outrage (by some) and more like those videos of people committing suicide and homeless men fighting
Also, out of context, it must rly s--- being a cop. You have these poorly trained probably overworked, dim witted white men in ridiculous life threatening situations every day. They get scared and react. That's not to excuse these videos; they're surreal and absurd. Just considering this in a wider lens-- system is failing every body. Gun control, race relations, public safety-- this touches a lot of third rails.white jesus, joeyp363, Red Rum and 2 others like this. -
