Haha--I mean, we were talking about MMLP. But okay: I'll grant you that his biggest song holds up.
Yes. Absolutely. I'm not being obtuse here at all--Jay Z was the biggest album-oriented rapper in the world other than Eminem, and he closed his second album with stories about accidentally shooting his brother and his regret over manipulating a girlfriend into selling crack for him. Country Grammar came out the same year as MMLP--go and listen to the personal narrative aspects on that.
If you wanted to make an argument that I could rebut, you should have said "Eminem was an example of personal narrative grounding rap music for people who were previously unfamiliar with the genre."
You didn't like "Go DJ"?
Sure, it would be an anomaly, but Eminem is an anomaly. He was a battle rapper who became a pop star because he was white and because he secured the proper co-signs. Point me to the disciples! People didn't replicate Eminem because it's very hard to--you have to be a tremendous talent in a highly technical kind of rapping, and you have to be able to harness teen angst that was drying up as the culture shifted in the decade following SSLP. The cultural moment that made Eminem Eminem wasn't permanent. That's not a criticism, I think that's just accurate history.mow, DKC, Sahara and 1 other person like this. -

(this goes for everyone here. we're talking about lemonade right now. eminem wasn't the first popular entertainer to drive buzz through an album's personal narratives -- making their music a reality tv mystery/puzzle that listeners needed to crack, etc. -- but he tapped into that in a way seldom seen before, especially for a rapper. fueling interest in music/show by making the ppl in ur personal life speculative characters is fairly standard now, but eminem should be noted for the way he pioneered that bridging)Dread or Alive, DKC, Michael Myers and 1 other person like this.Nov 18, 2025(This ad goes away when signing up) -

Would be nice if someone could post a best album/rapper/anything list without it devolving into a back and forth about Eminem

I guess if you are putting Eminem in your top rap albums of all time then I dunno, that means you really haven't matured or grown old of his s---. I've never been a huge eminem fan but I basically stopped listening to him when I turned 18. His stuff sounds great when you're a yungin but it's not that great in reality tbh

WPG isn't even saying prime em sucks, just that he doesn't think Eminem made a top 20 rap album of the past 16 years. It's not that ridiculous of an opinion to have.boyz n the suburbs, Ordinary Joel, ArthurDW and 1 other person like this. -
