That's a completely different argument then lol, don't know what you're trying to accomplish

2Pac and Nas debuts weren't commercially succesful neither (tho they sold better than Common)

And with "one of the first proper conscious mainstream rappers to hit the scene" I meant back in the 2000's, not of all time

I know that my point is kinda confusing but what I mean is that sound he'd use in Like Water From Chocolate (2000) and Electric Circus (2002) would share similarities with Be (2005) and influence tons of future conscious rappers (specially Hip Hop artists from Chicago)

Even tho cuts in Resurrection like "I Used To Love H.E.R" were far more important Common didn't get proper mainstream success until Electric Circus

EDIT: nvm, the singles from LWFC actually achieved mainstream success (specially The Light), which makes my point stronger. Unfortunately I can't find the first week sales.

lol white people barely speak about Common, highly doubt it

Would also like to add this:

    http://rateyourmusic.com/genre/Conscious Hip Hop/14

The amount of mainstream conscious rappers that released albums in 2000 can be counted with the fingers of one hand, even including relatively older rappers

@WPG what were your other choices for the list. I have most of these and would be interested in more of what didn't make the cut

Still can't take fancy language used to review hip hop music very seriously. Especially when it's used to review something like Tha Tour... I really enjoy that mixtape but not a fan of the way some people reach to find things that aren't there. Not saying @WPG did here but I'm sure he has a 3000 word review looking far deeper into it than it deserves floating around somewhere on the web.

    Great list

Question though: when did American Gangster go from top 1 to not mentioned at all?

He is trying very hard to come across as intelligent. He has been heavily influenced by @WPG 's posting style.

Do the artists behind the music actually ever like and show appreciation for pitchfork-style reviews? I only ever see them shi--ing on them.... Surely that says something. A lot of those reviews are so assuming and make out like an artist has intentionally set out to achieve some random symbolism/idea/theme when they're simply talking about what comes to mind and what they want to talk about.

Critics who ascribe "hidden meanings" to things in order to justify praising them are terrible and missing the point. I do the opposite of that.

I love that your disagreement with me is:

"This album is not as good as the others--because it isn't!"

Why isn't it? What makes Tha Tour less brilliant than the albums it's listed alongside? How quickly can you Google songs to hide the fact you never listened to it because you were too busy with Saigon and Obie Trice?

See there you go again with "an average mixtape." Almost anyone who's given it serious attention--I'm not talking just critics or fans, but other artists--have lavished it with praise. It's exceedingly, and obviously great (and groundbreaking) no matter where you start in the tracklist. Dark Fantasy is great, but let's not act like Flava, Tell Em, Who's On Top, Imma Ride, Givenchy, War Ready, Freestyle, Throw Your Hood Up or a handful of others aren't as good as anything Kanye's done this decade.

Let's be completely serious about this: You have no idea what you're talking about. You don't know the first thing about rap music; you don't listen to anything new, you're wildly conservative, you probably think Crooked I is the most promising young star in the genre. So when you scoff at new artists, it doesn't really move the needle for me. Keep calling something you don't listen to "an average mixtape." Let's see your list.

@WPG I'm always conflicted about Lost Tapes, because it was basically a compilation of unreleased material from Stillmatic and I Am.

I remember Blaze a 50 being leaked during I Am too, which I believe is why it never made the album.

So IDK, I definitely agree it's a top album of the 2000's, but to me, it's never really been an album.... IDK if that makes sense.

I guess it counts, because the songs never appeared on any of his albums, but it feels weird because of how the album was described and came about lol.

Great list though, and I hate to discredit any Nas mention on a top list, cuz you know I'm a big Nas stan.

I've literally never seen a list from you. If you have it on hand, post it here.
Holy s--- dude. Talk about "terrible debaters"--This is just more "it is because I said so!" What's your hangup with it? Where does it fail? How is it "average" you bumbling dolt :'(
I wanted very badly to include it. Definitely in the top 30.
