Jun 18, 2015 whaaaaaat? every single person i've talked to--and i'm including those who loved the first season and those who were lukewarm on it--has cited a huge drop off. like, to a person. thought it was a complete given? also, yeah, every good sitcom has a durable structure/blueprint, but let's not act like silicon valley isn't laughably repetitive.
Jun 20, 2015 Sunny is GOAT and that may just b because it's the first show ever where I had screeners of the entire season mailed to me like a month early 'twas Christmas if I ever really experienced one tbh
Jun 20, 2015 How? I saw you say this before too. I loved so much of it. And maybe it's too put on when he goes in his "this isn't comedy, it's just life" art house direction but the surrealism/dark comedy was strong as usual Then again if you just mean in comparison to its previous seasons and not in general than I guess I can't really comment (cause I haven't re watched past seasons recently) That two part finale tho
Jun 20, 2015 @captain awesome is right. louie wasn't that funny as a sitcom, which it more or less was at first. then, in s3, it fully became a "drama about being a comedian" or whatever. that four-episode arc where he's trying to get letterman's job is some of the most brilliant tv i've seen in the last couple of years--it was funny, heartbreaking, inspiring, but not too neat. fourth season had great moments (robin williams; that kid who played young louie is actually a great child actor) but was pretty f---ing masturbatory.
Jun 20, 2015 @Narsh I mean in comparison to the previous seasons-- agreed the two part season finale was strong and had some interesting things going on. Other than that, I felt like it was fairly staid season, episodes seemed like lesser versions of things he'd already tried on the show. Pamela is a good example of that especially in light of the events from last season @WPG I liked the robin Williams episode, but pretty sure that was the same season as letterman no? Fourth season had that rly brilliant stretch with the Elevator and Charles Grodin which took up like half the season at least -- someone else said it, but I wish that was turned into a movie. Top notch TV regardless, and this season just paled by comparison.
Jun 20, 2015 oh wow, looks like you're right, that was s3. it's funny, though--i wasn't as crazy about the elevator stretch as you are. it was very good, but i think you either make it a movie or pare it down a bit. i really felt that the latter half of each multi-part thing Louie did that season kinda dragged. actually haven't seen this year's season. have very little desire to.
Jun 20, 2015 Also I thought that the untitled episode in season 5, the one where he's having nightmares, was easily one of the best things he's ever done. I'm not going to say that season 5 is his absolute best but it's far from "weak" or a disappointment, I'd still place it above anything that I've seen this year (aside from Mad Men ofc), though admittedly, I'm not an avid TV watcher.
Jun 20, 2015 The only problem I've ever had with Louie is deciding to hook him up with Pamela. She's totally lost her usefulness as a character Need to get back into Veep - only watched the first season. I would sort of echo @captain awesome 's thoughts though - snark level very high. But the writing was often brilliant
Jun 20, 2015 Agreed that's largely why I was dis appointed with this past season. Their arc was effective in season 4 particularly as it was a contrast to Louie's more meaningful romance/message about communication --- this season was just treading water (them role playing etc) edit--I will say veep improves and gets more engrossing after season 1 @WPG disagree - I loved the elevator arc precisely because it's a prime example of blurring the boundaries between what's cinematic on TV v film. Great example of tvs recent ambition, why the anthology/"visual novel" format is extremely affecting storytelling @Vahn I forgot about the untitled episode - that was good. Felt a tad slight, or not fully formed imo. I get the sense this season he was less inspired. No? Which seasons did you think were worse
Jun 20, 2015 If your talking currently then I would have to say the Big b--- theory is the best comedy on TV.
Jun 20, 2015 i think if you limit the pool to network comedies, new girl, modern family, and brooklyn nine-nine are all better than big b--- theory.
Jun 20, 2015 @captain awesome I don't have a concrete ranking for the seasons, and I'd need to sit with this one a little longer but as of right now I'd pool it together with the first two seasons with seasons 4 and 3 taking the top spots respectively. I think that it being a shorter season, encouraged Louie to get more experimental and try his hand at ideas that wouldn't have fit in the previous two seasons. Stuff like the goat story in the Sleepover episode was pretty unique and unexpected in terms of how it was presented. Also how about the Cop Story episode? I thought that was brilliant, Rapaport went ham.
Jun 20, 2015 Hah I don't mind Big b--- theory. Solid sitcom for the morons. @Vahn yeah cop story + goat were good moments, but something just wasn't as impactful as, say, Louie's date with the rotund waitress in so did the fat lady... Or the episode where louie went to perform at a swanky gig for jErry Seinfeld and hooked up with that random hottie
Jun 20, 2015 I can understand an argument for Modern Family but the other two? Are you serious? You realize BBT will be just as syndicated as Seinfeld right? I mean that s--- is on like 5 channels. If it was a sub par comedy, it would never be as popular as it is. Everytime I watch the d--- show I laugh out loud at least once through out the show. It has the same effect on me as Seinfeld, every time it's on I never turn it off, unless there's a game on or something. But Brooklyn 9 9????cmon man Jesus Christ
