There's absolutely no way Travis has that much longevity IMO. I like Travis, but he's a trend-hopper, and more and more people are going to catch on as time goes by. He's hopping on tracks with artists he bites hoping no one notices he's stealing their flow AKA "The Game Special." I do think people exaggerate how much he flat out bites (rather than just is influenced by/going with trends), though there are some very obvious instances of it (I don't see how anyone could miss his Future imitation on Quintana Pt. 2). You know I love DB4R man, but let's not pretend it's the pinnacle of originality. Like I've said before, I think what he was doing Owl Pharaoh and before was more original—you could see the cudi/kanye influence, but it wasn't as much straight up biting for the most part.

Travis only had two co-production credits on yeezus btw and he has not made a project as good as section.80.

Guess I was misinformed about Yeezus, and I disagree about the s80 part.

QP2 and Bacc were totally aping Future, I agree. And BMSOY from OP was totally biting Cudi. But other than that, it's been known that DBR was Travis doing the ATL wave. Idk if you've heard any of the Rodeo snippets, but it sounds nothing like DBR. People compare his opening track on Rodeo to Nirvana, like it's that different.

I feel like there's this huge misconception generated from DBR because he delved into the ATL scene for one tape, people think he's like the next Soulja Boy, planning on hopping from trend to trend until the end of time. But he's said, even in his most recent interview, that Owl Pharaoh is his favorite thing he's done and he wants to do s--- like that, but always bigger and better. He definitely has longevity trust me his ability to go ignorant enough for ATL to f--- with him and simultaneously experimental enough for white kids across the country to f--- with him will be his biggest tool.

    Ultimate Cudi bite, imo.
But I don't care. I think as he continues to grow he'll form his own brand of sound (not that he hasn't started already).

I guess it remains to be seen with Rodeo—but, like, a year since DB4R came out is coming up fast. The only two songs that he's released since then were more ATL s--- featuring Young Thug and Future. I like both the songs, but it doesn't seem like he's heading in that different of a direction. Haven't listened to the snippets though.

Maybe I'm biased because section.80 is far and away my favorite Kendrick album, but I don't see any of Travis's projects being as good as...well, any of Kendrick's albums.

Great, now I'm going to have to make my own song so Trav doesn't have to hold that title anymore.

High Fashion wouldn't sound like anything from Atlanta if future wasn't on it, and NBN literally bears no resemblance to any Atlanta music, barring maybe Father. Besides, both were throwaways, and I feel like thats like judging Kendricks new album off Party Nauseous. If you approach DBR as his intentional detour into the ATL scene, which it is, then there's no reason to assume Travis will continue to do so. Also, see 5 Mo, White Girl, and Night Rider for post-DBR songs that Travis has done.

I can understand your thought process and where you're coming from, but I feel like you're being a bit dismissive simply because he went trap for one mixtape. Are we to assume Future will always rap over trap beats with pianos from now on because he did a tape with Zaytoven? Even still, I maintain that DBR is the absolute best project to be labeled as ATL trap, and given my bias I'll go ahead and say it's top 6 or so, maybe not absolute #1.

High fashion pretty much is a Future song. It's produced by wonda girl, 808 mafia, and metroboomin lol. Nothing But Net might not be straight up trap but it definitely sounds like ATL rap to me. That's not like judging Kendrick's new album by PN because PN was recorded for an album that came out in 2012 and he never released it. Travis released these two songs in conjunction with the Rodeo tour.

Future has a much bigger catalogue and releases music much more frequently than Travis. It's very reasonable to assume that Travis is heading in direction that's sonically similar to 1/2 of his officially released catalogue, especially when the mixtape in question is supposed to be a precursor to his album.

Yeah but you gotta think that DBR was, at least in part, songs that didn't fit the vibe of Rodeo for being too trap, and that's why it was a whole seperate project. And only half the tape was clearly ATL, s--- like Backyard and Grey bears no resemblance to anything coming out of there. And songs like Mamacita and Drugs vary a lot more in their overall aesthetic than most ATL trap.

definitely agree that HF was basically a Future song featuring Travis, and still don't see the NBN resemblance, but one would think that the fact that fans are arguing that it sounds too ATL-ish is the reason he dropped them as throwaways, he doesn't want them to mar the album but they're still good enough to warrant being dropped. And what I meant by the kendrick reference is this:
Say GKMC dropped, and roughly a year later PN dropped. Even though it clearly would have been dropped because it had absolutely no relation to his next album, TPAB, some people would still assume that's the direction he was going to continue in. It's the same here, HF and NBN were obv released because they don't fit the almost grunge-rap aesthetic of Rodeo, and DBR was dropped as a seperate tape for these exact reasons, and even still managed to sound both better and more unique than a lot of stuff coming out of there.

But that didn't happen with PN lol. If he dropped Party Nauseous in conjunction with "The To p---- A Butterfly Tour" it would be very reasonable to assume that was the direction the album was going in. Plus, GKMC is not a precursor mixtape to TPAB so the point is moot.

I mean, we don't know exactly what Rodeo is gonna sound like. I don't scrounge the internet for snippets because I like to hear things in full, but based upon what the average person has heard, it's very reasonable to think it will be at least partially ATL-inspired. We won't know until we hear the album.

No artist ever bit another artist. Travis is the first dude to bite his role model.
Rodeo has a completely different sound than any of his previous sound/s. Skr8up said that Rodeo is going to sound like if nirvana produced it. Never catch me, Carnage and plenty more sound nothing like we have ever heard before. Travis is going to set a new sound and watch everyone bite him. Rodeo is completely going to change the hip hop game
