So my impressions after the first fight shifted dramatically on rewatches, but here's what I took away from it. Conor's first loss on the big stage humbled him enough for him to fix his biggest flaws and work on them. He developed leg kicks in camp and clearly boxed enough to get disciplined enough not to go wildly into exchanges like he was prone to when his left was sleeping everybody. Throughout the fight you see Conor walk away to catch his breath and reset to wait for a counter. That loss made him a lot smarter. That first round was super frustrating as a Diaz fan, but completely expected when Nate's kryptonite is widely known. Those leg kicks were money in the bank. Without that leg in top shape, it's hard to generate power which is a big deal when you're talking about a boxer who relies on volume and accumulation in the first place. After that flurry in the third round, Nate rarely convinced me with the shots he was hitting so while compubox were showing comparable numbers, I knew that didn't bowed well for him. Still, Nate was durable and as soon as McGregor was slipping he was on him. Those clinch exchanges were all his, even when McGregor was on the outside. Coach K told McGregor some bad advice in having faith in blocking those shots instead of telling him to pull out of cage grappling all together. At most I scored Nate winning 3 and 4 convincingly enough while round 2 was up for grabs, though less in his favor because of the knockdown. Conor clearly took the first, had an argument for the second, and was winning the 5th on clear and effective counters.

As far as the politics go, f--- all this bs about Conor moving up TWENTY FIVE POUNDS on TWO DAYS NOTICE. That's garbage. Plus his call out to Nate to fight at 155 like that isn't his preferred division anyway. Not sure Conor can cut down to 145 again, but I'd probably favor Aldo again after seeing how McGregor fades in a long fight and it still being questionable as to whether it's a weight thing or a fighter thing. Plus even at his best, McGregor's technical skills still don't touch Aldo's imo. I guess I'm a doubter for life. Sorry, if him scraping by a 19-10 journeyman on his second try didn't convince me otherwise.

I would be with you if the final moments of the fight didn't happen, that s--- put Diaz over the top tbh. But I gotta give it to Connor, he has improved greatly since the first fight, he was able to avoid getting taken down and that's impressive but yeah hopefully a third one happens cause that would be lit.

Conor isn't a great fighter. Respect for the takedown D but let's be real Nate isn't a great fighter either.

Conor in the ufc at the right time. Only meaning ful win he's had is vs Aldo imo

An exhausted take down was not the deciding factor here. Final seconds or not.

yeah i mean i agree he won the last round but the first 2 were clearly connor, and the second 2 could have gone both ways imo, they were tossups

I like conor, but i honestly had diaz winning this one, and even now i'm not mad. i think it was a well earned victory and while it's def disputable and contestable, i think conor winning is a solid victory and i have no problem with the judges decision

something about 2 guys having a fight as close as that, and that much animosity towards eachother, and then seeing them shake hands and give eachother props after the fight is just absolutely :beauty: to me

@Charlie I agree with most of what you said... particularly about the clinch. I was really wondering why he said that. I think because Conor was tired and getting tagged like crazy he felt it was all he could really do. He wanted him to recover. btw there was no way Nate won the fourth. The second round was the deciding round and could have gone either way. The knockdown won Conor the fight. I wouldn't have even argued with a draw tho.

When I heard weird advice from a coach, I usually chalk it up to the coach knowing what that particular fighter needs to hear. Still, even if you're assuring Conor he can survive those exchanges, even going so far as to say he is winning them, the judges are not seeing it that way. Bad idea to feed a losing strategy.

I'm starting to think on a rewatch I might only give Nate 1 round out of 5.... Still a hard fought match.

That tight of a fight the judges know a McGregor Diaz 3 is a much bigger deal if the score is 1-1.
