Sep 16, 2015 Iconic music label Def Jam Records might be getting a movie. Unlike that piss-poor, made for Lifetime Dogg Pound movie Daz willed into existence, this one will be backed by Universal Studios as part of their victory lap for doing their best Snoop impression and crushing every building in sight this summer, per a report by Deadline. Try not to get too hyped because the project is in its very early stages right now, but if it does happen, it’ll be based on 2002’s Life and Def: Sex, Drugs, Money, + God, co-written by Russell himself and George Nelson. Rather than focus its scope on the famed label’s entire history, it would do what any biopic should do, which is spotlight a specific time period in someone’s life rather than trying to cram every single d--- thing they’ve ever accomplished into a two and a half, sometimes three-hour long flick. Making the decision to chronicle hip-hop’s rise in the ’80s through the eyes of Simmons and label co-founder Rick Rubin is a great way to do it and, as of now, the studio wants Michael B. Jordan and Jonah Hill to bring the two Def Jam co-founders to the screen. I’m assuming I don’t have to point out which of them would be playing Russell and which of them would be playing Rick, so I won’t. Of course, this wouldn’t be possible without the success of Straight Outta Compton, and I know we’ve all wondered whose story would be told next, and while this isn’t the Shaolin story I hoped for, it’s still a pretty dope piece of news to start your day with. Plus, there’s no way to talk about Russ and Rick’s early days without talking about Uncle L, the Beastie Boys, and Run-D.M.C., so who else is going to fill out this movie? Start your fantasy casting. http://uproxx.com/smokingsection/2015/09/def-jam-records-movie-news/
