Jun 25, 2015 I don't think I have anything to add to that, well said. I totally wasn't expecting such an emotionally resonating experience from this; I'm not usually that interested in fantasy centred films so I put this off for a while but I'm glad I finally watched it because this was so entirely different from what I expected. Such a beautifully tragic ending
Jun 26, 2015 This movie was probably the hardest for me to get on-board. The whole thing and what I had heard/seen of it didn't really appeal to me add that to the subtitles and it was really off-putting. Eventually after hearing people rave about it for so long, I forced myself to watch it and was blown-away at how good it was. It's been a while since I watched it, so I'm gonna re-watch it soon.
Jun 27, 2015 man i don't f--- with subtitles, if it's important they'll say it again in God's language
Jun 27, 2015 There are two prongs to this. the subtitles distract from image but *words* keep you engaged
Jun 27, 2015 The double edged sword. The first foreign film I watched was Hero with my dad. I thought it was like 3 hours long. Rewatched it earlier this year and it's a brisk hour and a half. They've definitely grown on me.
Jun 27, 2015 reading itself alters your reading of time. If subtitles slow s--- down too much just watch it twice, once paying attention ONLY to image/sound and once with mind to read subtitles.
Jun 27, 2015 I wish I had the patience. I might try that with Possession. Felt like rewatching that one as soon as it ended.
Jun 27, 2015 It's been proven pretty clearly that we can't multitask. At best we can switch back and forth between tasks quickly. It's virtually impossible to not miss something while focused on reading.
Jun 27, 2015 crine. I've been reading subtitles my whole life, it's really not a big deal, I don't even notice I'm reading subtitles when watching a movie :vahnshrug:
Jun 27, 2015 yea i don't really notice either. tbf, dialogue spoken is distracting to the same extent as subtitles imo. Sometimes I watch films or at least scenes while not paying attention to the characters/content at all... just the images and sounds. Gestalt psychology says we turn s--- into a single activity. Reading + watching film because a singular task. But taking away elements, like reading, listening can help us focus our perceptions. When you read or listen to dialogue you usually don't notice s--- like slight camera movements and such. I usually watch with my perception focused on aesthetic, taking in figure and camera movement above all else. It's why i like art films. I don't think many people even know how to watch an art film.
Jun 27, 2015 As Vahn, i've read subs my whole life and don't think you miss anything visually, specially if you know what to look for, i prefer that to Dubbed movies which are a crime to me, where i live dubbed audio is becoming more popular, i hate it to the point i have left the movie theater once i realize it's dubbed. I only can stand it in classic (Italian) films because i have no other choice since they made them that way.
