what? "self-absorbed" would be the best descriptor of the hook alone. the song's about how mad drake is that some girl he used to f--- with isn't locked in a room waiting for him to fly back to toronto. i'm not knocking the song because it's misogynistic--lots of great music is--but it's pretty pathetically self-absorbed.
well, i'm saying that the singing/rapping on here is nothing notable, and is in fact pretty bad, in the verses especially. you can disagree, but you can't really say it doesn't speak to my central argument, lol.
i'd disagree with you. drake is aggressively middlebrow to the point that he's pandering. he's a c-grade version of s--- that's interesting. if drake is your favorite restaurant, you aren't leaving your house very much.
if the song were from an unknown artist i would listen to it once and never ever click on it again.

Best Friend by Yelawolf is probably my personal favorite. As far as song of the year though, any genre, Hello by Adele, and I actually like it. As far as hip-hop, how bout Back To Back by Drake? Best song from the defining beef of the year. :emoji_punch:

I'm sorry, I worded that terribly. Drake is self absorbed on this and songs like it (Thotful, Club Paradise). @Narsh

What I should have said is: if you feel like the fact that Drake is self absorbed on this is a detriment to the song, then you're reading too much in to a very simple pop song carried by an excellent refrain.

with obvious exceptions--songs about his/her childhood, emotionally vulnerable things, some narrative songs--rappers are selling some sort of cool. you get people to connect with you by saying things the audience wants to say. drake engineers his music to connect with the maximum number of people. the fact that he thinks (even if he's right, which he clearly is) the best way to do this is to act like a shitbag control-obsessed ex-boyfriend is corny and lame and i can't respect it. if drake weren't rich he'd be laughed out of a lot of rooms he thinks he belongs in, and that's not a quality a rap star should have.

EDIT: he also doesn't make good music. i feel like i need to reiterate that--before we get to any philosophical disagreements, the song is just bad.
