May 23, 2015 He really didn't promote it much at all so it's no surprise that the sale figures weren't very high. Not to mention there really isn't a song on this album that could go on to be a hit radio single like Swimming Pools or b---- Don't k--- My Vibe were.
May 23, 2015 no way anyway it will always b a very respected album even if it didnt sell as great as some people thought
May 23, 2015 I'm going to support kendricks music till the end. GKMC changed my life and got me into rap music !! KING
May 23, 2015 In my opinion, yes, it was a flop. It was WAAAAAAAAAAAAY over hyped and didn't have the same impact and overall feeling that GKMC did.
May 23, 2015 nah.. maybe commercially but as an album in the hip hop culture, it did what it needed to do
May 24, 2015 It isn't on GKMC's level but it certainly isn't a flop. Its a great album regardless and only the people that over hyped the album before release might consider it a flop.
May 24, 2015 A commercial flop.... When it comes to hip hop sales? @Koolo Nope. It is a huge success for a hip hop album. Let me remind you that just two hip hop albums topped 500k sales last year. That was Eminem's MMLP2 (Which was released in 2013) and J. Cole's album. Let's not be blinded by all the hype etc. By all means. It has a good total amount of sales considering the state of hip hop sales. Now is it a flop compared to Kendrick's standard? Does he even have a standard yet? I mean... He sold huge amounts of good kid in the US (1,4m sales adjusted). Don't forget that it was his debut album. So he isn't really in the position of someone like Drake. But can he be compared to the other hip hop artists? The album is such a huge change of sound. It had a whole other sound than Good Kid. So is it a natural drop now? I mean, it might be a bit to early to tell. As @filipwaw already pointed out. The album is selling much lesser than good kid at this stage. Whether the album will have a resurge... Remains to be seen. Right now... It is kind of doubtful. But again. The album is a huge change of style. good kid and TPAB are totally different approaches. So it might have turned some people off. A person who loved good kid, doesn't have to like this album. Who knows though... Although Kendrick is a mess too. He will perform These Walls on Ellen next week. I love that song... But why the h--- isn't he going to push King Kunta? I mean what the h---. Thats how you destroy your commercial success. King Kunta could've been a hit on it's own. The perfect summer song. Yet this is how he and his label handels the album. So why are we even expecting a good outcome? Hype alone will never be enough. We saw that with Eminem with his last album (Even though still a huuge success with almost 2,4m sales in the US). At this point. Platinum is almost impossible. The album already fell below 10k sales. I will provide you guys with a full update in the Kendrick sales thread. So we can have a better opinion on the whole chart stuff. Sorry that I neglected the thread.
May 24, 2015 for an album with zero radio bait, it'd be ridiculous to say TPAB, which sold 100k+ more first week than GKMC, "flopped." Even moreso when you compare it to contemporary records. Compare it to ASAP's last album - which had one moderate smash (Goldie) and one huge smash (Fckin Problems) yet never sold in total as much as TPAB did first week. That's flop material to me.
May 24, 2015 It wasn't a flop but it got boring for me quite quickly. GKMC still gets daily plays but I haven't heard anything for TPAB in a long time! The album is solid but it just didn't age well
May 24, 2015 I really don't understand why people were expecting another GKMC with this album. It was pretty clear early on that Kendrick was going in a different direction.
May 24, 2015 I agree, an artist has to grow and duplicating the same sound album after album doesn't show a true artist
